Job Description
Working in Energy Management:
Providing power efficiently and reliably is among the core challenges in times of increasing solar and wind energy production. Here, our intraday trading teams are making a vital and exciting contribution, executing the day-to-day market activities and optimization for Statkraft’s own assets as well as Origination activities. We are active in all relevant short-term markets, integrating renewables on the Continent and the UK in a highly commercial manner. In total, Statkraft manages over 10.000 MW of conventional power plants and renewable capacity across major European power markets. We contribute significantly to the successful integration of renewable energy into the overall energy landscape. In order to meet energy demand, we operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year supported by a high degree of automation.
What we do?
With Statkraft’s Continental Energy Management department, two intraday trading teams are responsible for balancing our portfolio of intermittent generation, dispatching our flexible asset portfolio and trading energy proprietarily on our major markets in the UK and Germany. Our Algorithmic trading unit invests into automation to optimize our diverse portfolios across borders and optimize flexible asset classes in strong collaboration with the 24/7 trading teams. Every day, our short-term energy managers offer flexibility of our assets into the relevant day-ahead power and ancillary markets, building a bridge between the on-site control rooms of our plants and the wider energy landscape. Lastly, our power operations team handled all physical flows and power schedules across transmission system operators and exchanges in Europe.
What will you do?
As a trainee in Continental Energy Management you will:
- Assist in balancing the portfolio of renewables and dispatching the flexible asset portfolio
- Work hands-on with analysis and market models to enhance automation and optimize diverse portfolios across borders
- Support with various teams to ensure seamless collaboration between day-ahead and intraday trading, algorithmic trading and power operations
- Explore best practices for offering asset flexibility into day-ahead power and ancillary markets, acting as a bridge between on-site control rooms and the broader energy landscape
- Learn and absorb what it takes to perform short-term trading across Continent and UK
Qualifications
You will be part of the Continental Energy Management Team and get to know all angles of our day-to-day operations. We look for a trainee who is able to oversee the complexity of our business, in order to suggest improvements and make our process and systems future proof. Additionally, you will build an understanding of the wide range of stakeholder our business has, from asset owners to long term traders and Origination teams, being able to shape the departments footprint in the wider Statkraft organisation proactively. At the end of your training, you are either an asset to the department as a business allrounder, or decide you want to dive even further into the daily business of short-term trading and asset optimisation.
To be successful in this role, you should possess the following qualifications:
- An above average university degree in Economics, Business Sciences, Natural Sciences or Engineering
- Strong background in mathematics and statistics, hands-on coding experience (e.g. Python)
- First experience in the energy markets domain or trading business
- High level of intrinsic motivation and strong commercial mind-set
- Team player with a high level of commitment when dealing with individual responsibility
- Flexible, accurate and capable of further developing the business
- Fluency in English, good command of German or other languages is a plus
