With over 30,000 EV Chargers installed in the US, Powerflex is one of the largest L2 EV Charging networks. Tens of thousands of drivers charge their vehicles every month with Powerflex.
As a Sr. EV Charging Engineer at PowerFlex, you will lead the development and execution of development and test of EV charging products into PowerFlex’s end-to-end technology solutions. This includes EV chargers and balance-of-system equipment deployed at customer sites. Your role will be integral to ensuring the quality, performance, and compliance of charging technology, while collaborating across teams to drive key decisions and business objectives.
Location
This role will be a hybrid position based out of our Mountain View, CA Office and the selected candidate will be expected to be in-person 3 days a week. We will only be able to consider applicants who are local to Mountain View, CA or are willing to relocate.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate is an experienced engineer with a strong technical background in testing hardware, software, and integrated systems. You will design and execute validation methodologies, stay at the forefront of EV charger technology advancements, and work with internal teams and third-party partners to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction with PowerFlex integrations.
- Support the evaluation of charging hardware, including first article teardown, preliminary firmware investigation, and technical expertise for the selection of hardware to be certified on the PowerFlex platform.
- Collaborate with third-party partners, including OEMs, partners, and sophisticated customers to achieve strategic goals based on testing results and performance data.
- Design and implement test plans (automated and manual) for EV charging hardware and new software features, focusing on compliance, usability, and performance validation.
- Develop and execute comprehensive validation methodologies for different components of PowerFlex’s technology stack.
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of the latest EV charger technologies, industry trends, and advancements to inform testing and integration strategies.
- Create and manage advanced testing methodologies, including the development of test fixtures and automation, ensuring thorough evaluation of systems, including edge cases.
- Provide finalized test reports and results to support software and hardware release management processes and critical business decisions.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and product teams to ensure successful integration and deployment of solutions.
- Partner with automotive OEMs on vehicle integration efforts, including Plug-and-Charge functionality, fleet telematics, interoperability, and other collaborative areas.
- Work within test labs to develop and refine hardware- and software-in-the-loop systems, ensuring robust product validation.

- Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or equivalent discipline / work experience. Masters or higher preferred.
- 3+ years of experience testing complex technical products, including hardware and software integration.
- Experience testing software products, APIs, and integrated solutions, with a focus on system-level validation.
- Hands-on experience working in test labs with hardware- and/or software-in-the-loop systems.
- Experience using diagnostic tools, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or network analyzers, for debugging hardware and software issues.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product, operations, and engineering, to align testing methodologies with business objectives.
- Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows and tools for testing in agile development environments.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Strong understanding of the EV-charging landscape, including OCPP, ISO 15118, OCPI, AC/DC systems, Plug-and-Charge capabilities, and fleet telematics.
- Exceptional communication and project management skills, with the ability to progress discussions and initiatives with key stakeholders effectively.
- Proficiency in evaluating firmware, hardware integration code, and troubleshooting both. Strong coding skills in both scripting and compiled languages. =
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and practices as they relate to EVSE, including secure communication protocols, encryption, and secure firmware updates.
- Familiarity with electrical system standards, such as applicable UL standards, IEC 61851, SAE J1772, CCS, and NACS, and their application in EVSE systems.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize test data into actionable insights and recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing technical depth with strategic priorities.
- Knowledge of cloud-backend and IoT integrations for EVSE, including how hardware interacts with remote management systems.
- Knowledge of automotive systems and communication protocols (e.g., CAN bus, LIN bus) for vehicle-to-charger communication.
- Familiarity with open-source testing tools and frameworks, as well as the ability to contribute to their customization and improvement.
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in EVSE testing.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring thorough testing and documentation of results

Compensation
The pay range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 annually. This position is eligible for PowerFlex's comprehensive Health and Welfare plans including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement plan and paid time off. The total compensation for this position may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable). PowerFlex's compensation packages carefully consider a candidate's qualifications, experiences, and education in relation to the position.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a seated position. Long hours on computer keyboard. Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.
Working Conditions
Approximately 80% of the time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Adobe etc.), telephones, and general office equipment. Possibly 20% of the time is spent traveling to conferences or meetings or field traveling to project sites.
