About This Position
The Senior HV Project Engineer/Engineering Manager will lead and be accountable for the HV design/strategy, EPC design coordination for HV & MV, utility interconnection coordination during the development, financing, construction, and commissioning phases of the renewable facilities (solar, wind, battery storage, green hydrogen, etc). The candidate will also be responsible for providing technical support to the operation team.

Responsibilities and Duties- Lead and own the preliminary HV transmission and substation design, MV distribution preliminary designs, and single-line creation of the HV facilities.
- Manage and own the relationship with the interconnecting utility, leading monthly implementation meetings, RFIs, and all technical design decisions during the development and execution stages.
- Manage and own the relationship with the EoR, OE, IE, EPC, or any other external consultants and vendors to work collaboratively on the design, optimization, and review of the facility during the design and execution phases.
- Responsible for development and maintenance of technical specifications, design criteria, standards, and exhibits (EPC technical exhibits, testing protocols, vendor specifications, etc.) to ensure all documentation is comprehensive and maintains a high-quality product
- Lead and maintain ownership over the entire interconnection process, from application filing to COD, by working with external consulting partners.
- Maintain and improve upon the existing engineering tools for design, analysis, and calculation
- Advise on any HV technical aspects on PPA negotiations, interconnection agreements, financing, or any other relevant legal agreements.
- Accountable for meeting the offtake requirements with a cost-optimized and constructable solution
- Aid in EPC RFP and commercial supply agreements to ensure technical requirements are accurately defined and reflected while ensuring lower LCOE
- Support LMP analysis with generation and transmission assumptions and results review
- Work towards becoming the HV technical lead for IE diligence and project financing
- Work cross functionally between development, land, permitting, engineering, construction, and operation teams
- Ensure timely and cost-effective resolution to regulatory, permitting, and technical issues associated with the execution and delivery of the facility
- Ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety standards in all engineering with aspects of the facility
Qualifications and Skills- Practical understanding of HV transmission and substation equipment, MV distribution equipment, design/cost trade-offs, metering, relaying, and SCADA/plant controllers.
- Technical background in power system design and studies.
- Manage interconnection study processes in ERCOT and CAISO, familiar with various studies in process, and conducts reviewing/challenging of the study results
- Capable of assembling an interconnection application
- Highly organized and effective project management skills
- Advanced knowledge of Steady state modeling tools such as ETAP, SKP, DigSILENT or similar
- Understanding of Dynamic modeling tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCADor similar tools
- Advanced knowledge of Excel
- Practical knowledge of working with EPCs and utilities during the design and construction phases
- Basic understanding and working knowledge of LMPs
- Basic understanding of advantages/trade-offs of the different technologies, system design, optimization levers, cost drivers, contracting pitfalls, construction challenges, life cycle use, and challenges
Experience- Minimum of 8 years managing HV work and/or interconnection of utility-scale renewable projects for a developer, or working as a consultant to developers (IE or OE) OR a minimum of 8 years working on EPC HV design or in transmission planning studies
- Experience creating specifications and designs of HV transmission and substation equipment OR experience contracting or constructing HV transmission and substations
- Experience taking 5 or more projects through CAISO, ERCOT, or SPP interconnection processes. Preferred experience in two or more markets, and preferred experience in the implementation phase (pre-EPC contract through COD)
- Experience building or reviewing Interconnection applications and Dynamic models of utility-scale renewable facilities to ensure quality and accuracy. Capable of coordinating and reviewing the scope and studies of the interconnection process.
