Position Summary
The EHS Specialist is responsible for supporting and executing EHS strategy and programs in Singapore ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations and effective risk management at the Singapore manufacturing site. The vision for Illumina is that every Illumina employee will be a leader in EHS. The EHS Specialist is an individual contributor and will play a role in helping Illumina to achieve this vision through high engagement and empowerment with our employees. This position reports to the Associate Director, Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China and the individual will be based in Singapore.
Position Responsibilities
- Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Singapore EHS programs and processes. Programs can include, but are not limited to Risk Assessment, Hazard Communication, Chemical management, Lab inspections, Hazardous waste, Ergonomics, Incident Management, and Occupational Health.
- Partner with site functional areas to implement methods, programs, controls, processes, training, and safeguards which promote compliance and engage all employees in EHS programs.
- EHS program subject matter expert (SME) at the site level.
- Set expectations and drive accountability for basic corrective actions and tasks.
- Conduct Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis. Ensure hazard identification, near misses, injury and illness cases are effectively managed to closure among the site functional areas. Set expectations and drive accountability for basic corrective actions and tasks.
- Maintain metrics that measure the performance of Singapore EHS programs, compliance, and risk management. Partner with stakeholders on EHS performance.
- Work on assignments with multiple variables, potential outcomes and customers
- Apply department policies and procedures to resolve a variety of task-based issues for the site.
- Partner with global and regional EHS and local teams in implementation of EHS management system.
- EHS system administration and management (i.e. EHS software or tools).
- Coordinate / engaged in employee trainings (i.e. emergency drills, new-hire orientation, etc.)
- Actively participate in strategy and development planning for system application of EHS policy.
- Be the Trusted Advisor – collaborate, partner with, and influence internal stakeholders on EHS matters.
- Support negotiations with both internal and external parties (i.e. interface with regulatory agencies, EHS relevant vendor management, etc.).
- Advocate for EHS initiatives and promote safety culture through engagement with functional leadership and teams (i.e. EHS month or other EHS-led events).
- Support site safety committees, emergency response teams and Operational Excellence activities
- Other projects and activities as assigned and or needed.
Position Requirements
- Intermediate experience in site EHS programs – risk assessment, incident investigation etc.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluency in English, spoken and written.
- Thrives in a fast paced, dynamic, cross functional and highly collaborative environment.
- Initiative with good sense of responsibility, self-driven and independence.
- Strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or closely related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
- Preferred background and diverse experience in biotech/pharmaceutical or relevant industry.
- Experience in and sound knowledge of ISO 14001 & 45001 management system preferable.
- Previous experience working within a manufacturing environment is a plus.
- Registered Workplace Safety and Health Officer (WSHO), preferably with other relevant EHS certification
