Job Description
As a Principal Project Engineer / Technical Specialist in the Grid Services team, you will
play a key role in the design and development of Statkraft’s Greener Grid Parks with a
particular focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
You'll be responsible for overseeing the optimal technical design concepts at
development stages building on experience gained from projects in construction and
operation ensuring the projects can be delivered and commercially sound business
cases can be supported. The position will work closely with the development Project
Managers and provide input to the procurement and construction teams.
As the bulk of the current pipeline of projects for Statkraft are BESS projects, an expertise
in that particular field would be a strong preference.
Through your responsibilities on projects, you will play a critical role in helping to
decarbonize the GB electricity system, increasing the use of renewable energy and
displacing fossil fuels to deliver Net Zero.

Managing Project Engineering activities
- Design management of the Greener Grid Park development portfolio.
- Manage resources responsible for producing the physical design and access layouts using AutoCAD including the electrical plant layouts, clearances and safety considerations for construction, maintenance, and operation.
- Work with the GIS team to produce constraints mapping to influence initial design.
- Solve specific technical questions and challenges that arise while designing and developing Greener Grid Parks.
- Manage design documentation and be responsible for the design risk assessments for each project.
- Document design decisions and changes in the Design Basis Report.
- Support the Planning Team with input into planning drawings.
- Review planning documentation from a technical standpoint with particular focus on safety and noise.
- Check and review design reports and calculations from contractors.
- Become a member of the fire safety working group for BESS and feed into the fire hazard report and design mitigation.
- Manage the Principal Designer responsibilities in line with CDM regulations at the development stage including the HSE File and supervise external consultants.
- Support the production of Employer’s Requirements documents for contracts for synchronous machines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), civil and electrical balance of plant including transformers, cables etc.
- Produce and review single/key line diagrams for projects.
- Review and assess technical parts of tender responses.
- Input to project cost estimates and assess options for optimising costs.
Qualifications
- Masters / university degree in engineering or sciences or related.
- Numerically literate with ability to direct, specify and assess, studies and analyses.
- Conversant with GB grid connections and operation, processes and requirements for BESS.
- Contract technical drafting including writing specifications.
- Have strong knowledge of CDM regulations.
- Experience with a team designing / delivering multi-million pound project(s).
- Demonstrate a keen interest and affinity in working with renewables and experience with battery energy storage systems.
- Be proactive and solution orientated with strong attention to detail and solution- orientated approach to problem solving.
- Show strong communication, relationship building (including multi-team player) and people skills.
- Be well organised and target oriented; strong ability to prioritise.
- Have ability to concisely frame issues by providing context, analysis, recommendations, and risk/benefit, both in written and verbal format to project teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- London and/or Glasgow based
- Statkraft has been successful in winning contracts at seven sites in NGESO’s Stability Pathfinders comprising of both synchronous compensators and grid forming battery technology. The Development team are working on a pipeline of over 3GW of projects and are constantly on the lookout to introduce new technologies to our sites.
- Statkraft currently operate two projects at Keith and Lister Drive with synchronous compensators under Pathfinder Phase 1 and are building another four projects across the UK.
