Job Description and Duties
Under direction of a Supervising Bridge Engineer, a Senior Bridge Engineer, the Technical BIM Specialist will perform difficult and complex work on specialized transportation-related structures, engineering projects, or research studies. The incumbent may work in a bridge design branch and receive work assignments, including digital delivery of the projects, and quality reviews from the Branch Chief. This is a technical position with responsibility for training and mentoring, digital project delivery relative to large, complex or high risk bridge design work, and preparing BIM related guidelines for Bridge Design Staff.
This role requires coordinating tasks with engineers in the design branch and in other Division of Engineering Services (DES) functional units as well as with externals such as District project management and design staff. The individual may need to participate in the Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Bridges and structures pooled fund tasks.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Bridge Engineer exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
