Requirements
- Degree (3 Yr.): Bachelor of Science or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years’ civil experience
- Registered with SACNASP or EAPASA
- Knowledge National Environmental Management Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, municipal bylaws, company procedures and policies (understand and implement)
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and policies
- Understanding and implementation of ISO14001
- Knowledge of construction processes (operations) and equipment
- Knowledge of construction materials–bitumen products (stable mix emulsion, bitumen rubber, hot bitumen), diesel, petrol, oils, cement
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct a pre-construction site inspection to ascertain the pre-commencement condition of the site (i.e., the status quo) and keep photographic record of the site condition;
- Conduct environmental awareness training as part of the induction programme;
- Undertake daily site visits to monitor compliance with all mitigation, monitoring and management measures contained in the Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) and the Environmental Authorisation (EA), during the construction and rehabilitation phases of the project;
- Evaluate the achievement of the performance indicators associated with each impact management objective specified in this EMPr;
- Liaise with contractors, engineers, environmental control officer and other members of the project team with regard to the requirements of the EMPr;
- Provide guidance as and when required regarding the implementation of the environmental management measures contained in the EMPr and EA;
- Assist in finding environmentally acceptable solutions to construction problems;
- Ensure that the working area, site camp facilities, access roads and no-go areas are properly demarcated;
- Develop, implement and maintain proper topsoil management practises on site;
- Develop, implement and maintain proper waste management & pollutions prevention strategies on site;
- Develop method statements for different operational activities;
- Implement a system form complaints and incident investigation, and ensure effective corrective and preventive action is taken
- Recommend additional environmental protection measures, should this be necessary;
- Keep detailed records of all site activities that may pertain to the environment, and produce compliance monitoring reports on a monthly basis during the construction phase of the project;
- Ensure satisfactory rehabilitation of disturbed areas on site, after construction is complete;
- Participate in monthly external audits and ensure effective close-out of any findings raised;
- Report to the Site Agent, SHE Coordinator or SHEQ Manager on any issues relating the to the performance of your role as Environmental Site Officer and your ability to ensure compliance to the EMPr.
