Planate Management Group (PMG) is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, and Orlando, Florida USA with technical support centers in South East Asia and East Africa, that provide program management and facilities engineering services worldwide. Planate is a small business provider of planning, design, infrastructure management, technical consulting, engineering, and construction management services in support of the US Department of Defense (DOD) and its Service (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps) missions, along with other US federal agencies, all over the world.
The Climate Change Advocate serves as Planate’s point-of-contact with key stakeholders to deliver sustainability and climate resilience products and service in alignment with their climate change requirements. This role involves extensive collaboration with Planate senior leaders, staff, field offices, partners, financial institutions, and government entities and other stakeholders to implement clearly defined and actionable sustainable best practices and policy development that support the desired economic, environmental, and social outcomes when challenged with climate change.
This is an onsite position located at our office in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Philippines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with and build trust relationships with key Asian and Pacific climate change stakeholders, specificallythe Asia Development Bank’s (ADB’s) Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department and the Philippines Climate Change Commission. Develop networks with financial institutions funding climate change actions and government entities that have economic, environmental, and/or social responsibilities affected by climate change. Seek opportunities to outline Planate’s capabilities to support sustainable development and climate resilience.
- Maintains awareness of the global policy landscape for sustainability and climate resilience by maintaining awareness of evolvingfinancial, energy, and climate legislation and regulations. Acquire and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Paris Agreement, ADB documents to include its Strategy 2030, the Philippine Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) 2024-2029, and the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP). Become familiar with similar documents that guide the efforts of other entities financing climate change.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current trends with respect to the impacts of climate change on communities, ecosystems, and natural resources. Identify adaptation strategies for ecosystem impacts resulting from climate change. Assist clients/key stakeholders to develop strategies to address the relationship between carbon emissions and the resulting climate change impacts on natural resources critical to their economic, environmental, and social frameworks.
- Assist clients to develop a backlog of high-quality climate change projects and programs that align with the green guidelines established by governments or funding institutions to qualify for climate change funding.
- Assist private and government clients to develop grants that meet the criteria to obtain funding for sustainability projects.
- Exchange climate change knowledge and data collaboratively with academia, industry, professional societies, non-profits, and the public to ensure proposed climate actions are grounded in a comprehensive understanding of potential outcomes and impacts. Facilitate the development of economic risk assessments of climate change impacts that clients/stakeholders can use to inform their risk mitigation actions and plans.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions to educate staff and stakeholders on sustainability initiatives.
- Support efforts to transition to sustainable, lower-carbon, and resilient energy systems by assisting key stakeholders to deploy renewable energy and accelerate improved energy efficiency across power, heating, and cooling systems, as well as other energy-intensive industries and infrastructure.
- Align efforts with ADB’s strategy for the decarbonization of transport through its avoid–shift–improve approach that favors low-carbon multimodal transport systems, including electric-powered mobility, and through support for transport systems that are climate resilient.
- Support Planate’s efforts to deliver water supply, wastewater, and stormwater management approaches that are climate resilient, safe, sustainable, and efficient, achieving long-term water security, resilience, and reliability.
- Support key stakeholder efforts to deliver risk informed urban development that discourages development in flood prone areas, promotes urban greening to reduce heat island effects, improves air quality, and mitigates increasingly detrimental effects of frequent and severe heat waves.
- Assist staff to identify the impact of climate change on the availability of natural resources of strategic importance to stakeholder’s operations and mission.
- Assist key stakeholders to deliver resilience in coastal and other highly vulnerable populations through integrated support that addresses infrastructure, ecosystems, livelihoods, and institutional development, and shape market demand by focusing procurement requirements to align with sustainability.
- Assist clients with the completion of sustainability assessments and the development of action plans to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and improve resource efficiency. Evaluate and validate programs for carbon offsets and renewable energy credits, and related emissions markets.
- Assist key stakeholders to assess and continually improve the ability of their internal policies and those of their supply chain partners to leverage opportunities and mitigate risks associated with climate change.
Qualifications to be successful in the role:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or equivalent degree and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in sustainability, resilience, or climate preparedness, with a history of involvement in developing and executing successful sustainability practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Sustainability Studies, Renewable and Clean Energy, Urban Affairs/Planning, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Public Administration/Policy, Law, Economics, Business Administration, or closely related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with current concepts of conservation, climate mitigation, and sustainable practices including but not limited to energy conservation, decarbonization, air quality, heat mitigation, climate health impacts, green building, economic opportunities for disadvantaged communities, resource and water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable resources, and environmental reporting metrics.
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment and leadership skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders and government officials at differing levels of government and financial institutions.
- Ability to exercise effective verbal, written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to demonstrate working level skills in word processing, document preparation, spreadsheet management, cost-benefit analysis, and sustainability and climate resilience project financing.
License or Certificate:
- Must have valid driver's license at time of hire and maintain as a condition of employment.
Preferred Certifications:
- Certified Climate Change Professional (CC-P), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials, Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), Sustainability Excellence Professional (SEP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP).
