Planate Management Group (PMG) is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, and Orlando, Florida USA with technical support centers in South East Asia and East Africa, that provide program management and facilities engineering services worldwide. Planate is a small business provider of planning, design, infrastructure management, technical consulting, engineering, and construction management services in support of the US Department of Defense (DOD) and its Service (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps) missions, along with other US federal agencies, all over the world.
The Climate Change Officer directs Planate’s efforts to sustain an organizational culture that ensure the delivery of its portfolio of products and services align with the sustainability and climate resilience goals of its global clients. This role involves extensive collaboration with Planate staff, field offices, partners, clients, professional organizations, and government entities to implement clearly defined and actionable sustainable best practices and policy development that support the desired economic, environmental, and social outcomes when challenged with climate change.
This is an onsite position located at our office in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Philippines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with leadership to incorporate the organization’s position on climate change into its corporate structure. Lead the effort to establish the organization’s position as a climate change resource through meaningful messaging that is credible with key stakeholders. Collaborate with the staff to update the organization’s website to emphasize its climate change resources. Participate at various networking events to highlight the organization’s sustainability capabilities and commitment to climate resilience.
- Utilize sustainment and climate resilience knowledge and experience to advocate for the alignment of key climate considerations with the organization’s operations, strategic planning, risk mitigation, and stakeholder engagement. Promote climate change governance to advocate for resources and establish organizational policies and procedures to identify and mitigate risks and develop opportunities associated with climate change. Orchestrate strategies to deliver increased organizational value through solutions and processes that go across organizational boundaries and silos.
- Advise, guide, and lead multi-disciplined teams to integrate sustainability practices into operational strategies. Facilitate workshops and training sessions to educate staff, partners, and stakeholders on sustainability initiatives. Prepare oral and written reports and presentations covering various sustainability issues for staff, partners, clients, government officials, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with professional organizations and government entities to identify best practices and policy for sustainable development and climate resilience. Network with key climate change stakeholders to sustain knowledge of climate-related opportunities and risks.
- Maintain awareness of the global policy landscape as it impacts stakeholders’economic, environmental, and social conditions due to changes in financial, energy, and climate legislation and regulations. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current trends regarding the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the availability of natural resources essential to the viability and success of stakeholders. Support the development of strategies for optimizing clients’ consumption of natural resource (e.g., energy, water, land) given current understandings of climate change impacts. Identify potential risks and consequences of current and proposed consumption plans.
- Apply system thinking to client transportation, utility, energy, and urban development requirements to identify sustainment opportunities and potential risks posed by climate change. Review proposals to identify opportunities to incorporate climate change considerations and advocate for system changes to codify their incorporation into future proposals. Establish a systems approach to compile necessary data for integrating relevant climate change considerations into infrastructure development and asset management strategies. Advocate for the appropriate use of system tools such as biodiversity assessments and product life-cycle assessments.
- Promote innovative programs to address climate change challenges. Evaluate and validate client programs for carbon offsets and renewable energy credits, and related emissions markets. Undertake research to become familiar with accounting systems to assist clients to record and manage greenhouse gas emissions, based on GHG Protocol verifiable by third parties.
- Provide advice and guidance to promote the successful execution of high-value, complex projects that contribute to the mitigation of and/or are adapted to account for climate change. Maintain awareness of economics and future pricing of energy, water, and natural resources to guide strategies, plans, and decision making. Leverage knowledge and awareness of climate issues to offer guidance relative to the resourcing of initiatives to lower climate-relevant emissions and to protect stakeholders from the impacts of climate disruption.
Qualifications to be successful in the role:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or equivalent degree and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in sustainability, resilience, or climate preparedness, with a history of developing and executing successful sustainability practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Sustainability Studies, Renewable and Clean Energy, Urban Affairs/Planning, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Public Administration/Policy, Law, Economics, Business Administration, or closely related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with the most current concepts of conservation, climate mitigation, and sustainable practices including but not limited to energy conservation, decarbonization, air quality, heat mitigation, climate health impacts, green building, economic opportunities for disadvantaged communities, resource and water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable resources, and environmental reporting metrics.
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment and leadership skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key climate change stakeholders and personnel at differing levels of various governments.
- Ability to exercise excellent verbal, written and spoken communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization, and with key stakeholders.
- Ability to demonstrate advanced level skills in word processing, document preparation, spreadsheet management, cost-benefit analysis, and sustainability and climate resilience project financing.
License or Certificate:
- Must have valid driver's license at time of hire and maintain as a condition of employment.
Preferred Certifications:
- Certified Climate Change Professional (CC-P), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials, Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), Sustainability Excellence Professional (SEP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP).
