Position Scope:
The Prattville Mill is a complex, fully integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility with two paper machines. The mill includes multiple process lines of wood handling, pulping, power and recovery, and effluent treatment. The scope of the position includes implementing, coordinating, maintaining, monitoring, and reporting the progress of environmental programs. The position works within the HSE, Health Safety and Environmental, group and reports to the Environmental Manager.
The Job You Will Perform:
The Environmental Engineer’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing visible and active leadership in delivering excellent safety results
- Reporting and communicating safety and performance measurements against objectives
- Completing safety audits to ensure internal and external resources are complying with safe work practices
- Coordinating and driving all waste management compliance activities
- Ensuring that the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities
- Interfacing directly with federal, state regulatory agencies and community members to represent the mill within the community and region
- Participates in environmental compliance audits and assists the sites in closing the open action items
- Prepares, reviews and updates environmental reports
- Interacting with and providing regulatory guidance to mill operations, maintenance, and management personnel on a day-to-day basis
- Managing day-to-day waste activities related to landfill operations and provide support to landfill operators
- Participating as a member of HSE department; maintaining strong relationships with other business unit personnel as well as operating and maintenance department leaders
- Coordinating and communicating with operating departments regarding regulatory concerns/support, including periodic training for salaried and hourly teams on environmental compliance as needed
- Serving on a weekend duty team for the HSE group
- Providing environmental support during outages
- Acting as owner’s representative for contractors providing services within Environmental department
- Develop Corrective Actions Plans to address systematic gaps
- Participating and leading in the development of Environmental Management System procedures for Waste management
- Actively using and improving upon existing systems for managing daily activities, including development of standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Initiating and facilitating problem solving through trouble-cause-correction processes (TCC)
- Utilize strong organizational skills to handle multiple tasks effectively
- Maintain process knowledge and understanding of HSE operations, regulatory requirements and systems
- Work effectively alone and within a team
- Make timely and effective decisions
- Implementing systems to improve/sustain results
- Facilitating the implementation of new procedures and controls required by the change in facilities, products, and corporate policies and procedures
- Serving on a weekend duty team for the HSE group
- Perform other duties as requested
Required Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or other related field
- No less than one (1) year of experience in a manufacturing environment (pulp and paper industry experience preferred).
- Environmental area experience or knowledge is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with practical application of environmental regulations desired.
- Must be experienced using a computer and skilled in word processing, spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel)
- Plant Applications and PI ProcessBook experience is desired but not required
Position level and pay may vary based on experience.
