Job Description
A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in NREL’s Catalytic Carbon Transformation and Scale-up Center involving the design of innovative approaches for high-throughput catalyst design, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation. The researcher will apply state-of-the-art continuous fluidic approaches and instrument interface and control algorithms in support of multi-investigator, interdisciplinary projects focused on the development of smart autonomous lab development and catalyst design for the conversion of renewable and waste carbon sources (e.g, biogas, biomass, plastics, CO2) into fuels, chemicals, and materials. The specific scope of projects will be determined based on candidate skills and interests. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal up to three years.
Basic Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will:
- Design, synthesize, and characterize solution-phase synthesized materials
- Creatively develop scalable catalyst synthesis techniques that are amenable to automation
- Have demonstrated scientific leadership through publication and presentation record
- Communicate with researchers and engineers operating state-of-the-art experimental systems to collaboratively design complementary experiments, analyze data, and interpret results
- Disseminate knowledge through publications in technical journals and presentations at conferences, symposia, and review meetings.
- Develop new concepts and ideas for controlling materials properties across multiple length scales
Required Education and Experience: Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science granted within the last three years
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in autonomous experimentation
- Hands on experience with Python for interfacing with scientific instruments and for implementing instrumental control algorithms
- Experience in milli/microfluidic systems
- Basic understanding of computer-aided design software and additive manufacturing technologies (i.e., 3D printing)
