Michael Baker International’s engineering and environmental professionals manage and staff active projects in over 40 countries on five continents. Services are provided for a broad range of projects and capabilities, including highways, airports, bridges, rail and transit systems, government and commercial facilities, water and wastewater infrastructure, oil and gas infrastructure, and commercial/urban development. DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International is seeking an Environmental Associate (EA) to join our multi-disciplined transportation team based in our Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Chicago, and/or Indianapolis office. A hybrid (home/office) work situation is also available with required attendance in the office as needed, therefore candidates should be within a reasonable commute to an office location. The EA will work closely with Michael Baker’s engineers, planners, and environmental scientists conducting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) assessments including field surveys, Waters of the US identification/delineations, public involvement, cultural resources, administrative record, progress reports, and technical documents. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent communication, writing, presentation, interpersonal, attention to detail, and time management skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate would assist with day-to-day tasks/projects under the direction of project managers and senior staff members and work effectively with project teams, clients, and other stakeholders. The candidate should be capable of working in an office and field environment, as needed.
Typical tasks may include, but not be limited to:
- Create NEPA documents for transportation projects in Ohio and Indiana. Experience with higher level CE documents and EA/EIS documents preferred.
- Conduct field work in support of ecological, wetland, and stream impact assessments, permitting, for various transportation project types and sizes in OH, IL, IN, and other locations.
- Providing accurate documentation of field tasks performed in accordance with established procedures and preparing field sketches and site maps.
- Collecting and compiling quantitative and qualitative data to prepare reports, maps, and related graphics and facilitation of public meetings as a member of the project team.
- Conducting field evaluations and assessments, researching regulations and standards, developing reports, technical and QA/QC reviews, and final deliverable submittals.
- Assisting in development of environmental reports to summarize field procedures, data collected and existing environmental conditions.
- Communicating and interacting with other staff and subcontractors.
- Managing personal workload and coordinating schedule with supervising manager and department manager as appropriate.
- Under the supervision of a senior staff member, interacting with clients regarding project issues such as interviewing for site assessments.
- Working simultaneously on multiple tasks of varying size and complexity.
- Other duties as assigned by supervising manager and/or department manager.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- A 4-year or advanced degree in geology, biology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Ability to obtain professional licensure in the future a plus.
- 0 to 2 years of professional experience preferred.
- Proficient critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Earth, Adobe, or Bluebeam.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License or ability to secure.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical duties for field work activities include the ability to:
- Accommodate moderate travel to project sites will be required at various times of the year.
- Walk over uneven terrain for extended portions of the workday in all weather conditions.
- Work in remote access, commercial/industrial, and construction environments.
- Wear specific PPE including hard hat, hearing, and eye protection, and lift up to 50 lbs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in any of the following will be viewed as a plus:
- ArcGIS, AutoCAD, database software proficiency
- Surveying, telemetry, or GPS instrumentation
- OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training
- Working knowledge of environmental research, investigation, and assessment principles, analysis methodologies, and NEPA regulatory guidelines.
- Ability to obtain one of the following:
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or Certified Wetland Specialist (CWS)
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $53,541-$73,083. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
