Job Summary
The Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line is currently seeking a full time Environmental Health Specialist to support our government customer in Portsmouth, VA on a hybrid schedule. This Public Health (PH) program enables our government customer to maximize readiness through force health protection (FHP) strategies and solutions for current and potential operational public health, preventive medicine, and chemical, biological, and radiological (CBRN) threats. The core scientific and technical capabilities and product lines in this program are to promote Operational and Expeditionary Preventive Medicine initiatives that directly strengthens deployment readiness of the Forward Deployable Preventive Medicine Unit (FDPMU) platform and where commensurate, other operationally unique preventive medicine capabilities. Battelle shall enable these capabilities, products and services by providing Scientific and Technical Information (STI) deliverables, by performing Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and other Research and Development (R&D) related analytical services.
Responsibilities
- Assists in the assessment, design, development and evaluation of preventive medicine program areas.
- Provide professional and technical guidance and field experience across various levels of the organization.
- Coordinate with relevant organizations and technology activities to guide future environmental health standards and technology. (Focus areas include shipboard, installation, military operational water, food, and sanitation programs.)
- Coordinate and integrate the current science and technology available to effectively and efficiently enhance capabilities for the execution of preventive medicine programs.
- Advises and consults on technical aspects of environmental health standards.
- Prepares routine correspondence, manuals, instructions, fact sheets, frequently asked questions (FAQs) and other risk communication products.
- Develop and deliver training materials to Navy and Joint Staff preventive medicine personnel to cover pertinent public health subjects.
- Developing and maintain training materials for environmental health topics such as food service sanitation, DOEHRS, general sanitation requirements for living spaces, barber and beauty facilities, gyms, confinement facilities, and shipboard sanitation programs.
- Delivery of training on the above topics both in-person and via on-line methods such as MS Teams.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, environmental science, or related field.
- Mastery of environmental health concepts, principles, and practices.
- Possess professional management skills for program implementation and evaluation.
- Ability to formulate solutions for complex problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and written, especially to engage in formal and informal discussion of technical matters.
- Ability to develop, draft and revise policies, standards, and technical documents.
- Ability to review scientific technical documents which impact existing policies and take appropriate follow up actions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in environmental health, environmental science, or related field.
- Certification as a Registered Sanitarian and/or Registered Environmental Health Specialist with NEHA or any equivalent State certification credential.
- Professional experience with US Navy preventive medicine, environmental health, and/or safety programs.
