Environmental Specialist (1x)
Purpose
The Environmental Senior Specialist is an experienced engineer or other technical professional who will provide detailed technical and operational advice and engineering support regarding water management. This role will provide subject matter expertise to develop and implement catchment-wide water management strategies, maintain and be responsible for a site-wide probabilistic and qualitative water balance model. The Environmental Senior Specialist position will support the Environmental Manager in the identification and strategic management of water-related risks and opportunities at Merian.
Essential Duties
• Champion and assist in the implementation of the site water strategy and water accounting framework.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive Life of Mine Water Management Plan, and operating plans for major water facilities.
• Maintain and be responsible for the site probabilistic and qualitative water balance model.
• Provide technical advice and reviews on tailings storage facility design, management, and deposition strategy as related to the water balance model and Life of Mine Water Management Plan.
• Provide technical advice and reviews on seepage collection system design and operations, and project-manage staged construction and commissioning of these systems.
• Assist in the implementation of the site water management charter and the site water management team.
• Assess water-related aspects of site activities, maintain site risk register and track adherence to legal requirements, external obligations (including International Cyanide Management Code) and internal standards.
• Provide technical advice on the development of education and awareness programs so that employees are aware of their water-related responsibilities, the impacts and risks associated with the activities and how to apply procedures to control these risks.
• Conduct inspections and audits to verify conformance with management strategies and operational requirements related to water risk and compliance with legal and other requirements.
• Contribute to the preparation of site closure and reclamation cost estimates annually for life of mine and Financial Accounting Standards Bulletin (FASB) 143.
• Implement and adhere to the annual Environmental Department budget, strategy, objectives and targets to improve environmental performance and continually reduce business risk.
• Develop and review reports, plans, permits and documents to senior leadership and regulatory authorities.
• Communicate and effectively collaborate with other Department leaders to successfully implement environmental programs and initiatives.
• Develop direct and indirect reports to ensure competency and ability to advance.
• Monitor department’s compliance with the requirement of Government of Suriname’s Agencies, as well as Newmont policies and standards.
• Prepare complex Environmental Management Plans, Risk Assessments, and Continuous Improvement Plans.
• Oversee the work area environmental audits and inspections program.
• Manage data collection of processes; review, and approve documents that ensure legal and other reporting commitments are in compliance.
• Assist in directing, planning and coordinating activities related to environmental management, specifically those pertaining to water and/or tailings management.
• Direct collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative laboratory analysis of air, soil, water and/or biological samples. Prepare monitoring reports based on analysis of samples.
• Complete projects without supervision, using technical knowledge, as well as thorough knowledge of environmental procedures, techniques and regulations.
• Maintain records for environmental compliance and prepare environmental reports.

Training & Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Geochemistry or related field and six (6) years of experience OR eight (8) years related experience.
• Post-graduate training, especially in water management, hydrology, geochemistry or environmental engineering is very highly regarded.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including excellent English.
• Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, database management. Experience with GoldSim is very highly regarded, and experience with ArcGIS is a positive.
• Strong analytical skills, with attention to detail and a focus on continuous improvement.
• Ability to interrogate and interpret information from monitoring results and technical reports and summarize in monthly presentations or reports.
• Ability to work as part of a team, but with limited supervision and still meet deadlines.
• Experience in statistical analysis of environmental data including interpretation spatial and temporal trends is desirable.
Working Conditions
• Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
• Walk on rough, uneven, inclined, wet terrain, and climb stairs.
• Wear personal protective equipment including hardhat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, gloves, or any other equipment to perform duties safely.
• Must hold a valid vehicle drivers license and be capable to drive a manual transmission light vehicle.
