JBS&G’s Sydney office has an exciting opportunity available for an Early Career Applied Mathematician, Environmental Engineer or Scientist (Geosciences) to work primarily with our Principal Environmental Engineer in Environmental Modelling (groundwater and surface water, including water quality) as part of Environmental Assessment and Approvals projects in NSW and across Australia.

About the role
We are looking for a Graduate Scientist to join our Environmental Modelling team based in our Sydney office, and will support technical studies for clients in the Mining and Contaminated Land Management market sectors. As a graduate, you will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects, learn from industry leaders, and make a meaningful impact on the environment. We strive to be the best consultancy in our field across all of our services. The role will comprise:
- Data management - pre-and post-processing of inputs to, and outputs from, environmental (water) models
- Numerical modelling (surface and groundwater, including water quality)
- Data presentation and interpretation including map and figure production via Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (such as ArcGIS, MapInfo etc.), specialist software (Graphical User Interfaces as well as custom-developed scripts such as FORTRAN and PYTHON)
- Limited exposure to fieldwork investigations (e.g., soil, groundwater, surface water investigations) will be provided opportunistically
- Preparation of environmental reports.
About you
- Tertiary qualification in Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering and/or Science (Geosciences).
- An interest in numerical and analytical methods (solved on a computer), which will be applied to groundwater and surface water problems.
- An interest in understanding how the natural world works, specifically with respect to groundwater and surface water interaction.
- Passion for technical excellence, attention to detail, desire to provide solution oriented and praiseworthy client service.
- Interest in producing computer generated maps and figures.
- High attention to detail.
- Well-developed problem-solving skills. i.e. a lateral thinker.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary team.
- Proactive and positive approach to work, learning, and problem solving.
- Willingness and capability to travel for fieldwork on occasion.
Highly desirable but not essential, the candidate will have experience in one or more of the following:
- Groundwater (MODFLOW, FEFLOW)
- Surface Water (Australian Water Balance Model, GoldSIM)
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (ArcMap, MapInfo, QGIS)
- Coding (DOS (Running Batch Files), FORTRAN, C, PYTHON, R etc)
