DescriptionThe Environmental Operations Manager oversees the environmental performance across business operations and ensures compliance with environmental regulations. The Environmental Operations Manager will also lead on-site environmental project staff by ensuring that each project site is conforming with Zachry environmental procedures and complying with all federal, state, and local regulations.
This position will utilize compliance evaluations for each project site and lead continuous improvement initiatives to minimize environmental impacts. The Environmental Operations Manager will support the teams by creating high level awareness surrounding environmental risks and opportunities.
The desired candidate will strategize new and improved practices to enhance the environmental performance as environmental requirements progress and stakeholder requests transform. Comprehension of permitting and knowledge of federal, state, and local level regulations for major infrastructure projects in both rural and urban environments will be crucial for this role.
Other responsibilities include building, managing, and mentoring environmental professionals, developing and implementing Zachry business strategies, and ensuring the safe execution of all phases of project work to meet stakeholder objectives as well as company goals. This candidate will work with the Director of Environmental Stewardship and independently as an integral team leader using knowledge of industry and protocols to accomplish goals and objectives to resolve challenges of diverse scope.
Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Environmental Policies: Create and enforce policies to minimize the environmental impact of the company’s operations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the organization complies with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Lead projects aimed at reducing waste, improving recycling, and promoting sustainable practices.
- Environmental Audits: Conduct regular audits to assess environmental performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Manage Project Environmental Staff: Provide leadership in managing staff performance, relationship management, staff dynamics, recruiting, retention, and mentoring environmental personnel for success
- Training and Education: Educate employees on environmental policies and practices.
- Reporting: Prepare and present reports on environmental performance to senior management.
- Coordination: Work with various departments to integrate environmental considerations into business decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field is required
- Minimum 7 years of environmental experience and supervision experience in the construction industry and be able to illustrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position
- Certification/s, previous trainings, or a minimum of 7 years on the job training is preferred in the following environmental regulations, permits, plans, or related items:
- Stormwater pollution prevention plan/s
- Spill prevention control and countermeasure plans
- Spill Remediation
- Waste management plans
- Vegetation management
- Hydrostatic discharge permits/plans
- Endangered species act
- Air permitting
- Industrial Wastewater permits/plans
- Recycling operations
- Tier II
- Demonstrate knowledge of plant operating equipment, systems, processes, and utilities
- Must be able to read and properly interpret complex documents including but not limited to project specific environmental permits/plans, federal/state/local environmental laws/regulations, and other various pertinent documentation.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SIMS and other various software programs.
- Requires travel up to 30%
- Master’s degree or equivalent preferred

An employee in this role will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, oral expression, and comprehension; Will be required to view a computer monitor/screen for long periods of time with breaks in-between; May be required to lift, carry and move objects up to 25 lbs safely; Capable of operating and functioning in an office-based work environment; Physical ability to perform occasional job site visits.
