Your role at GEI
GEI has an outstanding mid to senior level environmental opportunity in Sacramento or Oakland to help support our growing environmental practice in California. The position involves working on projects throughout California but especially in the Central Valley, Bay Area and Southern California. The position has tremendous short- and long-term growth opportunities for your career within GEI, including stock ownership. You will work collaboratively with clients and GEI’s other leaders and experts in the environmental and engineering fields, primarily on water, energy, and multi-benefit projects for private and public clients, especially water supply and flood districts. As part of our multidisciplinary project teams, you will have an important role supporting tasks and projects; preparing permit applications and providing regulatory strategy; and working as part of our dynamic team to solve an array of water and environmental issues critical to California’s environmental, water, and energy landscape.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Develop environmental compliance strategies for projects in California that reflect a broad and comprehensive understanding of applicable federal, state, and local natural resource regulations;
- Preparation and processing of Federal Section 404 and 401 Clean Water Act, Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, and California Fish and Game 1600 permit applications, among others;
- Leading aquatic resource delineation field surveys and preparation of associated technical reports;
- Supporting Federal and State Endangered Species Act consultations;
- Representing clients in meetings and phone calls with regulatory agencies;
- Actively participate in multi-disciplinary teamwork with biologists, planners, landscape architects, restoration ecologists, and engineers;
- Project management experience desired but not required.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA, BS, or MS in environmental science, biology, natural resources, or similar.
- At least five (5) years of experience with state and federal environmental laws, specifically preparing Section 401 and 404 of the Clean Water Act, Federal and State Endangered Species Act, and California Fish and Game Code permit applications.
- At least five (5) years of experience conducting aquatic resources delineations meeting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers standards, Sacramento Region and/or Northern California experience is desired.
- Familiarity with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and/or California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental documents.
- Knowledge of environmental resources in California.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including providing clear direction and effectively communicating in meetings.
- Valid California driver’s license.
