What can you expect?
As the Environmental Scientist/GIS, you will work onsite in either Anchorage, AK or Fairbanks, AK and you will utilize your knowledge to participate in collecting, synthesizing, and documenting data from investigated areas and assisting in the preparation of project documentation, in addition to providing field support as needed including field site supervision. In addition, you are responsible for processing spatial and environmental data through multiple GIS and environmental software platforms to create products used for final planning and reporting deliverables. Your personal initiative and critical thinking skills are essential to complete job duties with minimal guidance. Assignments are deadline driven so must be able to set priorities, take ownership of projects, work efficiently, and provide a consistent level of high quality in a high-pressure environment.
How will you do it?
- Develop, manage, and deliver geodatabases to clients that meet specific contract standards.
- Integrate geodatabases with other data management tools.
- Produce maps using raster and vector spatial data structures.
- Managing mapping GNSS data collectors and GPS software.
- Loading and post processing of GPS data via GPS Pathfinder Office®, ArcGIS Collector® and ArcGIS Pro®.
- Migrating GPS and processed survey data to project geodatabases.
- Conduct site investigation and assessments in accordance with state and federal regulatory guidelines and as directed by project management staff.
- Prepare technical evaluations of investigated sites using RCRA guidelines.
- Adhere to schedule and financial objectives, controlling time and expenditures to achieve project goals.
- Work with environmental technicians and other technical staff in data collection, site investigation, and evaluation of data collected in support of environmental restoration objectives.
- Provide scientific and technical guidance, support, coordination, and oversight to project staff preparing written project documentation.
- Review and document the processes necessary to obtain environmental permits, licenses, and other requirements necessary to achieve environmental restoration project objectives.
- Review and provide documentation of environmental technical standards, guidelines, policies, and formal regulations to ensure proposals meet all appropriate requirements.
- Prepare charts or graphs from data samples, providing summary information on the environmental relevance of the data.
- Determine data collection methods to be employed in site surveys and investigations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop®, Trimble Pathfinder Office®, Microsoft Word®, Excel® and Outlook®.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro®, ArcGIS Online® environment, ArcGIS Collector®, ArcGIS Survey123®; Trimble Pathfinder Office, and Trimble TerraSync® is a plus.
- Must be adept at understanding map projections, vertical and geodetic datums, and coordinate system transformations.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, government regulations, executive orders, and agency rules governing environmental projects and programs.
- Knowledgeable of State and Federal sampling requirements.
- Ability to comprehend and implement project Sampling and Analysis Plans (SAP) and/or Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP)
- Skill in using personal initiative and critical thinking to complete job duties with minimal guidance.
- Ability to set priorities, take ownership of projects, work efficiently, and provide a consistent level of high quality in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems and logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Must be adept at understanding technical aspects of environmental field work for conversion to graphics.
- Ability to maintain HAZWOPER and CPR/First Aid Certifications and pass a HAZWOPER Fitness-for-Duty physical on an annual basis.
Who is Brice Engineering looking for?
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical or Environmental Science.
- Two years of experience conducting environmental investigations preferred with the demonstrated ability to plan and conduct environmental assessments of sites where hazardous and/or toxic waste may have been released from past operations.
- Strong experience in use of ESRI® and Autodesk® software for preparing maps, creating spatial datasets and manipulating geodatabases.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations certificate preferred.
- Hazardous Waste Operation and Emergency Response training with current 8-hour refresher preferred.
- Experience with Health and Safety functions is a plus.
- A broad understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and experience in federal government projects is highly desired.
Working Environment:
- Working environment to include both office and field assignments.
- Field assignments may require several days to weeks in generally remote locations.
- Outdoor conditions may be subject to changes in weather conditions and noise levels.
- May require travel in aircraft, motor vehicles, ATVs and/or watercraft for periods of days to weeks, generally in remote locations.
- Must be willing and able to travel and work long hours to support rigorous timelines.
