Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM)
Conservation Corps New Mexico, a program of Conservation Legacy and AmeriCorps partner, aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. CCNM is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with conservation service projects on public lands. CCNM operates programs across New Mexico and west Texas that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. The CCNM Las Cruces office manages the Individual Placement Program.
Position Summary:
This position will provide technical support to the Cibola National Forest – Heritage Resources staff. The purpose of this position is to collect and record archaeological data and provide groundwork on which decisions are made. The accuracy of the technical work has an important impact on subsequent work performed by higher graded technicians and professionals.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
- Analyze archeological data in preparing reports, for situations where precedents are not fully applicable.Makes recommendations to be used in "determinations of effect" and "determinations of eligibility" by the archaeologist.Compile and report information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.
- Adapt ground search strategies as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames.Apply scientific methods to survey parcels of land to determine likely sites of archeological interest.
- Prepare Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms. Enter site and inventory information into databases and onto GIS maps.Responsible for the preparation of archeological and historical information to create interpretive materials for display and dissemination. Monitor archeological projects to ensure sufficiency of fieldwork.
- Conduct inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Research reference materials such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interview source individuals concerning project areas.
- Ensure that archeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
- Review work in progress to see those standards for pre-field research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met.
- Advise other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory and provides written instructions, research materials and supplies to all involved in planning and operation of natural resource activities. May serve as a crew work leader.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed outdoors where terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered with vegetation. Climate ranges from extremely dry to extremely wet and from hot to cold. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. The work may require the use of protective clothing and footwear.
Minimum Qualifications:
·Per federal grant requirements, this position is for young adults between the ages of 18-30 (35 for veterans), inclusive, at the time the individual begins term of service.
·Valid U.S Driver’s License - Drivers must be over 21 or have had a license for at least 3 years.
·U.S Citizen, U.S National, or Lawful Permanent Resident.
·Received or on track to receive high school diploma or GED.
·Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
·Practical knowledge of the basic theories and practices of archeology in order to compile technical reports and make recommendations to the archeologist.
·Advanced knowledge of the techniques of archeological reconnaissance in order to adapt ground search strategies to access a large variety of artifacts and features.
·Ability to perform library and archival research and oral interviewing to locate and obtain information.
·Knowledge of technical report writing to prepare reports.
·Skill using compass, aerial photos, topographic maps and GPS units to locate sites and survey areas.
·Knowledge of accepted safety practices to prevent injury or loss of life.
Physical Requirements:
- To successfully perform essential functions, the individual is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, etc. May be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl for significant periods of time and be able to safely lift 50 pounds on a routine basis. He/she must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to hike and navigate in rough terrain.

Safety and Judgment:
·Effectively communicate danger to others in the form of either a warning of danger others may be encountering or a notification of personal distress, injury or need for assistance. Must be able to do so at a distance of up to 50 meters and in conditions with limited visibility or loud background noise such as darkness or highwinds.
·Effectively perceive and understand significant and apparent hazards and follow direction by others so that you will be able to successfully execute techniques to manage hazards. These directions may be given before the hazard is encountered or may need to be given during the exposure to the hazard. Ability to respond appropriately to stress orcrises.
·Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions.
·If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self- medicating without assistance fromothers.
Substance Free:
·In accordance with a drug free workplace, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and program activities and while on organization property.
Background Check:
A USDA background clearance must be completed before the selected candidate may report to duty. The Forest Service will provide instructions for completion of the clearance after a candidate has been selected and will notify them when they have been cleared to start service. This process will determine the participant’s exact start date.
Participants will have access to government facilities and systems, and will be supplied with access to gov’t vehicles, equipment, and materials needed to work on the projects and activities as outlined above. Participants must adhere to all government regulations and policies for operating equipment, vehicles, security awareness, and safety.
