Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. STE in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking an intern who will perform masonry work in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance of park trail systems as well as carpentry work on trail structures such as log checks, foot bridges, stairs, and boardwalks. The intern will also be responsible for the transport of tools and materials to jobsites and trailheads.
The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is dedicated to providing diverse and underrepresented youth with a professional experience and exposure to technical fields, helping the National Park Service to recruit and develop entry-level talent to build a more
technically skilled and inclusive workforce. While also providing meaningful and relevant technical internships for racially and ethnically diverse students and military service members. The goals of this program include, supporting high-priority projects in parks, regional offices, and Washington support offices. Increasing relevancy, diversity, and inclusion in the NPS workplace. While establishing a pipeline for converting talented and diverse students, recent graduates, and service members into career positions in the NPS.
The HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.
The Maintenance Action Team Intern will serve as a member on a traveling crew stationed out of Albuquerque, NM. Project travel will include various national parks and monuments including Petroglyph National Monument, Dinosaur National Monument, & El Malpais National Monument.
Projects will improve the trails in numerous National Park Service units. Work will include building retaining walls, steps, checks, and applying trail surface materials that include crusher fines, concrete and native soils. Work also will include building stone Cairns in wilderness areas. Approximant 8 miles of trails will be worked on over the length of the internship
Position Responsibilities will include:
- Learning traditional trade skills.
- Supporting and learning from journey level employees.
- Retaining wall construction
- Concrete form construction and concrete finishing
- Construction of trail delineation structures
- Construction of trail steps
- Construction of water control devices
- Travel and responsibilities associated with working for long periods in travel status.
Minimum Requirements:
- No degree necessary.
- Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques.
- Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
- Personal transportation will be required to report to job site.
- 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 years old for Veterans with valid DD-214
- United States citizen or legal resident
- Ability to pass a US Secret Service background check and access clearance for project site
