Position Summary
The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for establishing and revising chemical health and safety protocols that are adopted by the University, as well as inspecting all work spaces to ensure compliance with all federal safety guidelines. Provide coordination of safety training, programming, environmental stewardship to the University Community. Perform the duties of a Chemical Hygiene Officer by providing leadership for continual improvement in laboratory safety, environmental performance, loss control and overall compliance across the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate program requirements with university departments and implement appropriate safety policies and practices.
- Ensure compliance with all federal and state environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Maintain campus-wide records of safety training, inspection reports, and documentation of compliance with chemical storage and disposal regulations.
- Advise departments on the appropriate personal protective equipment for individual work spaces.
- Inspect laboratories and storage areas for proper housekeeping and storage of chemicals.
- Ensure that life safety equipment is inspected and appropriate testing and maintenance are scheduled.
- Communicate all environmental safety policies and procedures to the University Community, including developing and maintaining environmental safety website.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biology or related field, two years of experience working in a laboratory or medical facility.
- Chemical Hygiene training.
- Experience in an academic or research setting preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DEQ regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work across departments and university colleges and schools.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and critical situations appropriately.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of reports and safety manuals.
- Ability to create and utilize documents using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to develop and revise web-pages in Cascade.
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Work Environment
Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
Salary/Pay Information
Commensurate with experience
Anticipated Schedule
Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
