POSITION SUMMARY:
The EC & S Coordinator is responsible for classifying non-hazardous material items in both the ASI and AS400 systems, as well as understanding and applying regulations that impact product and facilities regulatory compliance.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in researching regulations and guidance documents to determine risk and impact to MSC. Under guidance of the Senior EC&S Coordinator or Specialist, prepares reports for management on findings.
- Develops basic understanding of compliance regulations for waste, Spill Prevention Countermeasures and Control (SPCC), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), and Canadian recycling requirements.
- Provides customer service to internal/external customers and responds to requests in person, by phone, and/or through email in a timely manner.
- Reviews and classifies nonhazardous items for DOT transportation compliance
- Begins to complete more complex review of items such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), Exclusive Branded items, etc. with EC&S Regulatory Specialist or Senior Specialist oversight.
- Maintains successful cross functional relationships and continuously seeks to understand the requirements and expectations for each of those departments.
- Reads and uses information on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine applicable restrictions and/or warnings required for product sales.
- Evaluates vendor SDSs for Global Harmonized System (GHS) OSHA compliance.
- Coordinates with 3rd party SDS management company to reconcile inconsistent or outdated SDS and maintain parity.
- Under the guidance of department management, Specialist, or Senior Specialist assists with specific compliance projects.
- Ability to work in teams to support and increase department productivity and engagement.
- Utilizes the AS400 and ASI systems to determine items’ current status and classification as well as run reports. Begins to run more complicated reports in AS400, ASI and SAP systems. Analyzes the reports for findings and reports results to management.
- Tests and evaluates IT project updates in the QA environment and provides information to IT programmers and department management.
- Provides information to department management on the effectiveness of IT program updates.
- Uses SAP to request information from vendors on material composition (e.g. RoHS and REACh, etc.) and environmental compliance certificates for external customers. Reviews all certifications for compliance with regulatory and/or customer specific requirements.
- Develops a basic understanding of product stewardship regulations and laws (labels, SDS/MSDS, compliance with GHS, CA Proposition 65, etc.) and how they apply to this position and company compliance.
- Applies knowledge of US EPA regulations from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to properly characterize and dispose of wastes, including the review of hazardous waste manifests and Land Disposal Restriction Forms.
- Coordinates with waste companies to properly track and manage cradle-to-grave liabilities and recordkeeping.
- Provides guidance to branches and CFCs on Universal Waste storage and disposal as well as waste minimization opportunities.
- Seeks opportunities to minimize hazardous wastes through recycling, on-site use, and/or donation programs. This includes reaching out to schools, government agencies, and companies to find suitable recipients for these items.
- Analyzes and prepares detailed reports on sustainability attributes at MSC facilities and presents results to department management. Writes procedures and processes as assigned to support the EC&S Department Environmental Management System.
- Assists in completing contractor qualification questionnaires, ESH questionnaires, and Sustainability questionnaires.
- Completes at least one report that is submitted to a government agency.
- Actively participates on EC&S departmental teams and will be a gatekeeper (team leader) for a team.
- Actively expands knowledge in EC&S department functions through training and research.
- Stays current with EC&S department and mandated regulatory training.
- Adheres to the compliance, safety, security and internal guidelines/requirements for the position and company.
- Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose.
- Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year technical degree is required, preferably in Engineering, Science or Environmental Science. An
alternative would be a four year degree with a minimum of one year applicable environmental
compliance experience required.
SKILLS:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite® including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
- Interpersonal, communication, time management, organizational and analytical skills are required.
- Presents a professional image when interacting with team members and internal and external
- customers.
- Possesses high integrity and ethical standards.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid state driver’s license and the ability to travel 5—10% of the time is required.
