DescriptionThe Campus Sustainability Engineer operates as a project management professional in the planning, design, construction, and commissioning phases of medium to large scale Capital construction projects. Creatively develops, maintains and enhances sustainability solutions/programs at Harper College. The incumbent helps improve the design and performance of physical infrastructure and building engineering systems.
ResponsibilitiesExecutes professional mechanical, ventilating, plumbing and electrical projects for college facilities from concept through closeout.
Reviews B.A.S., H.V.A.C., plumbing and electrical drawings and specifications prepared by others for technical correctness, functional adequacy, and conformance with general College construction standards, applicable national and local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
Defines goals, performance metrics and a long-range plan for sustainability at Harper College.
Evaluates program effectiveness, documents performance trends, recommends, implements modifications to improve program effectiveness, and communicates sustainability progress on campus.
Assists faculty with bringing sustainability hands-on student learning experiences into their curriculum.
Develops, designs, facilitates and implements projects that promote employee engagement surrounding campus sustainability initiatives.
Manages sustainability budgets and grants; verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds as appropriate. Identifies and pursues grant funding or other savings programs.
Chairs the Sustainability Work Group and serves as a permanent member of campus Facilities Committee.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or an allied engineering field with appropriate work experience is mandatory as is the ability to become proficient in job required software applications.
Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience required. Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices and commitment to institutional and societal sustainability, preferably as related to higher education. Experience working in collaboration with multiple entities in the development and implementation of programs and services desired. Experience in strategic planning; project management; team management; problem solving, and idea marketing preferred. Higher education experience preferred.
Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Proficiency in AutoCAD and scheduling application software. Thorough knowledge of national & local building codes, building construction, and mechanical, electrical, air and water distribution components and their relationship to one another. Ability to organize and assign work and to inspect construction and supervise maintenance, repairs, and modification to mechanical, electrical, air and water distribution systems of buildings. Knowledge of sustainability initiatives. State of Illinois registration as a Professional Engineer, or ability to obtain Illinois license within one year of starting employment.
