About The Role:
This role will support the company in all areas of Corporate Sustainability with a focus on the execution of strategies for Human Capital Management, Human Rights, the Modern Slavery Act, the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
This role will report to Chief Sustainability Officer within the Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion and Social Impact Team. The purpose of the role is to ensure Northern Trust develops and maintains strategies and programs relative to Human Rights and the Modern Slavery Act commensurate with industry standards in all jurisdictions in which the company operates.
The Key Responsibilities of the Role Include:
- Serve as the lead project manager for the Modern Slavery Act program, milestones and deliverables
- Serve as a point-of-contact for supplier issues related to human capital management
- Provide technical consultation support to various internal teams involved in business and human rights activities
- Participate in business development, client, regulatory and investor meetings and projects, including but not limited to prospect meetings, due diligence meetings, internal and external collaborations for enhancing Human Rights activities and campaigns.
- Assist with the development recommend remedies and solutions to existing or emerging challenges in the Human Rights/Modern Slavery Act arena
- Conduct ongoing benchmarking to understand Northern Trust’s progress against peers in external rankings, and make recommendations on how to improve our position.
- Ensure timely and accurate responses to ESG-focused inquiries from investors, clients, non-governmental organizations and ESG rating agencies (DJSI, CDP, FTSE, ISS, etc.)
- Assess our capabilities to report real time against our ESG strategy and roadmaps
- Partner with key internal cross-functional stakeholders (Legal, HR, Investor Relations, Government Affairs, & Corporate Communications) to coordinate efforts on developing, refining, and advancing sustainability communication goals – proactively identify evolving topic areas and expectations of external interest.
Skills/ Experience Required:
- Team player with excellent communications, interpersonal and client servicing skills
- Strong track record of engaging with executives, clients and vendors to develop and maintain mutually beneficial business relationships
- Ability to articulate the sustainability business case, develop and communicate strategy, and educate/train a wide
- Skilled in problem solving with demonstrated effectiveness at applying broad experience and knowledge of banking and asset servicing
- Strong research, analytical and report writing skills
- Knowledge of regional employment and labor laws, and governmental compliance requirements
Knowledge of global labor laws related to topics such as working hours, wages and benefits, or anti-modern slavery regulations.
Excellent project manager with the ability to work independently and on multiple initiatives at the same time.
Several years of professional services experience including in the field of financial services, human rights and social issue experience a plus.
Relevant degree or higher – sustainability, social impact, business, finance and/or accounting
Familiar with UK sustainability reporting guidelines and significant experience of the UNGPs, various modern slavery acts, GRI and ILO standards - knowledge of SASB standards a plus
Knowledgeable of various human rights and social impact programs and experience as either as the lead consultant or team member
Experience with the following is considered a plus:
- Social value quantification and human rights reporting
- Social audit standards and their application in local and global value chains
- Consulting on responsible procurement strategies from a human rights viewpoint
- Supply chain risk reviews
- Performing social impact and human rights due diligence and reporting
- Experience with sustainability/ESG reporting software e.g. Workiva
- Experience with non-financial materiality assessments
