POSITION SUMMARY:
The Environmental Coordinator (EC) will work under the supervision of the Site Manager and Project Manager to maintain environmental compliance of the site. This position is primarily focused on the implementation and associated compliance of the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) at the project site. This position will support environmental related aspects, as required by federal, state, and local regulations during the construction phase of the project. This will include, but are not limited to, supporting Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), Threatened and Endangered species, recycling and waste disposal.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The EC will be dedicated to the control of all the environmental related aspects required by local regulation and authorization during the construction phase of the solar project. Typical responsibilities include:
- Oversight of the project environmental management system.
- Compile all information indicated as the Contractor responsibility in the Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) Compliance Matrix
- Coordinate with third-party Environmental and Agricultural Monitor(s) and ensure implementation of their recommendations
- Maintain site SWPPP compliance including coordinating inspections, reporting, and documentation of all installed Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Conduct frequent reviews and provide a weekly report documenting compliance to the Project Environmental Requirements, assessing identified weaknesses, and providing corrective action recommendations.
- Oversight of civil sub-contractors to ensure storm water BMPs, revegetation efforts are installed per approved plans
- Oversight of SWPPP/BMP maintenance crews to ensure measures are correctly maintained
- SPCC compliance including investigating and reporting spills
- Participate in meetings and correspondence with clients and project team for environmental support
- Additional tasks and trainings as assigned by the Site Manager and/or Project Manager
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Construction sites can be challenging environments, with long hours and physically demanding work. Candidates must have the stamina to stay productive throughout the day.
- Candidates need to be comfortable with various physical movements, including, but not limited to:
- Standing for extended periods
- Walking on uneven surfaces
- Traversing elevation change
- Traversing through vegetation
- Walking for an extended time periods
- Kneeling or crouching
- Bending and reaching
- Entering/exiting vehicles multiple times a day
- Clear vision is essential for safety. Candidates must be able to see hazards, read instructions, judgment of distances and spatial relationships.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/engineering or related degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- 5 years progressive environmental experience in New York state.
- Preferred experience with the Department of Environmental Conservation - Region 8
- Experience with the NY Storm water Manual, NY Erosion Control Bluebook, NY State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit
- Existing storm water certification – Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC)
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40-hour or ability to obtain.
- Licensed Drone Pilot preferred, but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).
- Must re-locate to the project site for the duration of construction project.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Interpersonal skills – Ability to present information to a small group of employees or sub-contractors.
- Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) to effectively work with subcontractors and employees.
- Computer literacy. This includes basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio) The ability to learn to use additional software efficiently, as needed.
- Organization skills. Scheduling, planning and prioritization.
- Intermediate construction drawing knowledge. Knowledge of drawing layouts, references, notes, and good practices associated with producing and reading construction drawings.
- Ability to follow safety rules without cutting corners. To understand the intent of safety rules, not blindly adhering to the literal words of the rule.
