The Principal Environmental Specialist ensures that a culture of safety is a value and is a part of everyone’s daily life. This position ensures the organization, planning, direction and control of Environmental requirements for the Evonik Production Sites in Janesville and Milton. The position provides the technical direction, expertise and leadership to oversee and continuously improve the Environmental processes in order to minimize risk and ensure that the sites are compliant with regulations. It is essential that the Principal Environmental Specialist collaborate effectively with members of all Site Management Teams. Principal Environmental Specialist must have effective communication and coordination skills to interact with the Site Head, site support functions such as Quality, Production, Supply Chain, R&D, Continuous Improvement, Engineering and Maintenance as well as external to the site such as Procurement, Controlling, Sales & Marketing and Auditing functions
RESPONSIBILITIES
Environmental, Health and Safety
•Responsible for creating a safety culture that it is everyone’s individual value to work safely.
•Ensure all employees, contractors and visitors, follow all Evonik EHS policies.
•Manage Industrial Hygiene activities.
•Responsible for all employees following all federal, state and local laws and regulations. Examples: OSHA PSM, RMP, RC 14001, ACC, EPA Clean Air Act Title V, WIDNR State Toxics and Air Rules, RCRA, Large Quantity Generator Hazardous Waste, OCPSF, local POTW, federal state and local EPA agencies.
•Responsible to develop and oversee programs to ensure all Hazardous waste requirements are met within the region and ensure compliance.
•Responsible for ensuring all regulatory reporting is submitted on time for regional sites.
•Ensure compliance with all permitting requirements for all region sites.
•Responsible for developing relationships with EPA and WDNR, representatives. •Responsible to provide environmental and regulatory input on plant operating decisions and routine activities.
•Interact with vendors, regulators, inspectors, environmental consultants and contractors in a way that builds trust among the parties.
•Prepare scope of work, advice on bid packages and make recommendations to award environmental projects.
•Responsible to coordinate test plans, sampling, data collection and analysis for specified trials and cleanup activities involving the environment. Analyze the results and make recommendation on further work.
•Responsible to track and maintain compliance with routine record keeping and reporting as required. Work with all sites to standardize data collection and processing.
Responsible for preparation and submission of regulatory permit applications and implementation of new regulatory requirements as required.
Continuous Improvement
•Responsible to ensure all safety, environment, health and security procedures are followed so that production is done in a safe manor.
•Responsible to determine root causes for variations, develop and implement action items as assigned.
•Responsible to identify opportunities for improvements and drive implementation, especially in waste minimization.
People Development
•Fosters a positive work environment characterized by an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust, accountability and open communication.
•Mentor site environmental and ESH responsibles to ensure development and knowledge transfer of applicable regulations and required components to ensure environmental compliance.
•Ensures that all employees follow policies and procedures.
•Ensure site responsible employees are trained on all required environmental regulations as required.
REQUIREMENT
The Principal Environmental Specialist would need to be skilled in a variety of areas including Safety leadership, Team leadership, technical and analytical skills, SAP, general computer skills, Environmental knowledge, PSM and RMP.
BS in Environmental, Chemistry, Engineering or other Science.
At least 5-7 years of experience in Safety and/or Environmental roles in manufacturing.
A thorough understanding of the regulatory process, the permitting process and the roles of the key stakeholders is required.
This person must have a working knowledge of problem-solving tools and root cause analysis
