General Position Summary & Responsibilities:
The Mechanic Foreperson is responsible for repairing and maintaining equipment by conducting quality control analysis to evaluate performance while ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the company's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. The Mechanic Foreperson must possess knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
This position operates under flexible parameters. The primary goal is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest-quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.
Essential Functions
1) Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
a) Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
b) Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
2) Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
• Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.
• Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production and processing machinery and equipment.
• Operate newly repaired machinery and equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
• Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
• Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
• Performs predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance while utilizing computer systems and programs to document maintenance and safety activities.
• Effectively utilize hand tools, power tools, and precision tools to perform all facets of the repair and maintenance process
• Possesses specific fundamental knowledge of bearings, power transmission equipment, lubrication, hydraulics/pneumatics, fluid pumping systems, heat
transfer, welding principles, rigging, overhead cranes and mobile equipment operation in support of all facility issues.
• Responsible for keeping equipment, work area and tools clean, orderly and in good working condition.
• Performs maintenance in adverse conditions (heights, confined spaces, poor weather, etc.) utilizing safe work procedures.
• Performs time entry and enters notifications and corrective actions/comments on work orders.
• Effective communicator with the ability to work independently with or without direct supervision.
• Performs additional duties as needed.
3) Special Projects
a) Aid throughout the yard as needed.
b) Performs special projects as assigned.
Internal Control Responsibilities
Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Job Conditions
This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Travel is not required for this position.
Handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance increases pressure. Workload may be unpredictable, and pressure can be substantial during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
• Must be able to work a 12-hour shift, which includes overtime, weekends and some holidays.
• Ability to: stand for up to 12 hours a day; lift and carry up to 100 pounds occasionally; crouch or bend at the knees occasionally to increase visibility; stoop or bend at the waist occasionally to increase visibility; reach at arms length frequently or overhead occasionally; twist and turn at the neck and trunk; walk frequently on uneven ground; handle and grasp tools and parts continually; communicate by speech and hearing continually. Must be able to carry a minimum tool belt weighing up to 20 pounds. Other lift/carry includes parts, tools, hoses, etc. Common to lift weights of 20-50 pounds independently. Occasionally carries weights over 100 pounds with assistance. At times cranes are available for lifts. Other times access to equipment doesn’t allow use of cranes. Visual acuity needed for close detail work. Mental dexterity needed as Mechanic I will work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.
Qualifications
• 5 years of journeyman experience required.
• Experience in various welding processes and oxy-fuel cutting for fabrication & repair.
• Experience in bearing installation, care and lubrication.
• Experience in crane maintenance preferred.
• Basic understanding of hydraulics
