Summary:
The Craft Technician is responsible for general maintenance work on Zoo facilities and structures. The Memphis Zoo operates on 76-acre campus with approximately 300,000 sq ft of building structures and will perform maintenance tasks in one or more fields: carpentry; electrical; HVAC; plumbing or painting.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for performing routine building maintenance tasks in one or more fields (e.g. carpentry; electrical; HVAC; plumbing, etc.).
- Inspects buildings and other structures to determine functional systems and detect malfunctions and needed repair making notes and recommendations using a preâestablished check sheet.
- Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures using the appropriate hand, power, and specialty tools.
- Performs minor plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices, etc.).
- Performs minor painting, carpentry, and masonry work.
- Reconfigures, installs, positions, and remounts items in public areas, offices and animal enclosures (e.g. , wall panels, storage bins, lighting, cabinets, gates, railings etc.)
- Prepares the surfaces and paints various structures and equipment (e.g. walls, evaporative coolers, floors, roofs, doors, restroom facilities, etc.) to preserve wood and metal parts from corrosion and maintain a safe, comfortable working environment using various painting equipment and related tools.
- Cleans air conditioning and heating units (e.g. coils, condensate pans, drain lines, cooling towers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring units are operating properly and at peak performance

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Reporting Structure: Reports to Maintenance Manager.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time 40 hrs per week position which regularly requires flexible hours and frequent weekend work. Must have flexibility to respond to and be on-site for after hour emergencies.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 -3 year of relevant experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to do the job.
Preferred Education and Experience: Previous work experience completing general maintenance work on a campus environment.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when on zoo grounds.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
