PURPOSE:
The purpose of this internship is to provide hands-on training as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the field of zoological medicine. There is one opening per session, and four session per year. This internship must be in conjunction with a degree program from an accredited school of veterinary technology. Additionally, selected interns are expected to show a level of professionalism and conduct that reflects the values of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.

Support the Veterinary Health Department with clinical procedures, including but not limited to:
- Assist RVTs with set up and break down of medical procedures.
- Assist with immobilization procedures such as anesthetic monitoring and recording, catheterization, etc.
- Administer routine treatments on hospitalized animals.
- Assist with preventative health care of the collection such as manual restraint, phlebotomy, radiography.

Maintain the hospital with duties that include cleaning and sanitization, equipment care, stocking supplies etc.

LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT:
This internship is assigned to five days per week for a period of ten weeks. Interns are expected to attend the full ten weeks unless an abbreviated session has been previously approved by the Senior Veterinary Technician (minimum 8 weeks). Four sessions take place annually: Spring (March–May); Summer (June–August); Fall (September–November); and Winter (December–February).
TIME COMMITMENT:
Five days per week (Monday – Friday) eight hours per day (8:00-4:30pm), for a minimum of 400 hours. Interns may be expected to work additional hours or weekends as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have completed their first year or be a recent graduate of an accredited school of veterinary technology.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred.
- Positive attitude and dependable.
- Willing to get dirty and be in all weather extremes.
- Able to lift 75 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
- Must pass a background screening.
- Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test prior to commitment.
- Responsible for own transportation and housing. Some housing may be available upon request but is not guaranteed.
SUPPORT:
Training for this position will be provided. In addition, the Senior Registered Veterinary Technician, as well as the employees of the Veterinary Health Department, will be available for questions and assistance.
DRESS CODE:
Neutral colored pants or shorts, scrub top or provided uniform shirt, comfortable shoes (steel toed recommended, but not required), and weather appropriate outerwear.
