JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the Research Management and Science Division. This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. MAJOR DUTIES: Major Duties: Understands Southeastern archeology, prehistory, and history sufficiently to reliably identify, record, evaluate, monitor, and interpret cultural remains in the field and in the lab to provide recommendations to management regarding the status and mitigation of impacts (present and future) of those resources. Designs, completes and oversees complex archeological projects; field investigations (both survey and excavation); archival research; laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing. Utilizes global positioning systems (GPS), and geographic information systems (GIS) technology to collect, analyze and interpret data inorder to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquires from management and others. Makes significant contributions to the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for clearances, permits, licenses, etc., as required by related policies, laws, and/or regulations.
