The Opportunity:
As a Yeast Fermentation Process Engineer, you will be an essential member of our Bioprocess team in Houston. This position focuses on bioreactor operation and the optimization of yeast fermentation processes at bench scale. You will have the opportunity to lead innovative projects, mentor junior staff, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and contribute to the advancement of sustainable bioprocessing technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Experimental Design: Design and conduct bench-scale experiments using well plates, flasks, and bioreactors to enhance upstream process key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Process Optimization: Apply Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies to optimize fermentation processes and facilitate tech transfer to pilot plant bioreactors.
- Documentation: Author and modify standard operating protocols (SOPs) to ensure compliance and efficiency in fermentation processes.
- Data Analysis: Contribute to process improvement efforts through effective experimental design and data processing; analyze and present data in visual or tabular formats.
- Communication: Effectively communicate findings, recommendations, and next steps to bioprocess leadership.
- Mentorship: Mentor junior research team members, assisting with lab scheduling, organization, and execution of experiments.
- Literature Review: Conduct literature reviews to stay updated on new technologies, processes, and protocols relevant to yeast fermentation.

Requirements:
Education:
- MS or PhD in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- MS with 2+ years or PhD with 0+ years of industrial or academic experience in microbial fermentation; experience in downstream processing (DSP) is a plus.
- Proven experience in operating fermenters, including setup, sampling, and troubleshooting both hardware and software.
Skills:
- Quick learner, open to adopting new methods and techniques.
- Familiarity with statistical data analysis and programming languages.
Preferred Attributes:
- Experience in a biotech startup environment.
- Knowledge of yeast fermentation and developing high-cells density cultivations
- Experience working with pilot plant reactors and biochemistry analyzers is advantageous.
