Overview:We are seeking a highly skilled Geospatial Analyst Intern to assist our team, focusing on natural resource projects related to recreation, habitat conservation, agriculture, renewable energy, and tourism. This position requires a broad skill set in geospatial analysis techniques, data management, and visualization to support decision-making for sustainable development, resource management, and land use planning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct geospatial analyses to support natural resource projects, including recreation, habitat conservation, agriculture, workforce availability, renewable energy, and tourism initiatives.
- Utilize GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, AGOL) to collect, process, and analyze spatial data from various sources (e.g., feature layers from federal, state, and local repositories; satellite imagery, LiDAR, aerial photography).
- Create high-quality maps, visualizations, and reports to communicate geospatial findings to stakeholders, including clients, partners, and decision-makers.
- Perform spatial modeling, suitability analysis, and environmental impact assessments to inform land use planning and resource management strategies.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., economists, planners, data and research analysts) to integrate geospatial data into project workflows.
- Manage geospatial databases, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and accessibility across projects.
- Stay up-to-date with advancements in geospatial technologies and methodologies to continuously improve project outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field. A GIS Certificate or senior standing with 2+ years of project experience is acceptable.
- 2+ years of experience in geospatial analysis, preferably in natural resource management, recreation, habitat conservation, agriculture, climate and energy, or tourism.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, QGIS) and remote sensing tools.
- Experience with spatial analysis techniques such as raster and vector analysis, network analysis, hydrological modeling, and terrain analysis.
- Familiarity with data formats (e.g., shapefiles, feature layers, GeoJSON, KML) and geodatabases (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS).
- Strong understanding of cartographic principles and spatial data visualization.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, land use planning, and resource management practices.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
- Excellent communication skills for presenting technical information to non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) for geospatial data processing and automation.
- Knowledge of LiDAR processing and working with DEMs
- Experience in sustainability, ecological restoration, or outdoor recreation planning.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis for natural resource assessments.
Salary, Hours, and Duration
Compensation: The hourly compensation for this part-time non-exempt internship is $22-$25/hour, based on education and experience. This position is not benefit-eligible.
Hours: A minimum of 16 hours per week (upcoming class/holiday/travel schedules can be accommodated).
Duration: This internship is expected to start in October and end in January, with the possibility of extending through the spring and summer months if business needs and performance warrant it.

The position will be located in our Portland office. ECOnorthwest offers a hybrid work schedule. To ensure opportunities for collaboration and teamwork, with the exception of remote workers, employees are expected to prioritize in-office work Tuesday through Thursday.

Generally, Mon-Fri 8-5.
