- Our network of Greenmarkets, Farmstands, and the work of GrowNYC Wholesale ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, healthiest local food.
- We blanket the five boroughs with resources like food scrap and clothing collections to make waste reduction, recycling, and composting easy for all.
- We build and support community and school gardens through volunteer days, technical assistance, training, grants and more.
- We provide 70,000 children each year with programs that provide meaningful interactions with the natural environment.
Assistant Director of Wholesale Food Distribution (Full-time):
Position Summary
We are seeking an Assistant Director of Wholesale Food Distribution, who will work closely with the Director to ensure the smooth operation and strategic growth of GrowNYC Wholesale. This role is pivotal in enhancing the program's efficiency and effectiveness and supporting its mission to bolster the financial viability of regional farmers and empowering New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food. The Assistant Director will support the Director with managing the program’s day-to-day operations, strategic growth, staff development, and financial sustainability. This position requires a dynamic leader with strong organizational skills, a commitment to sustainability and food equity, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to achieve both mission-driven and financial goals.
Requirements
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):Program Management
- Assist the Director in overseeing day-to-day management of the Wholesale Food Distribution program
- Provide redundancy to oversee management and operations in Director’s absence
- Ensure the implementation and continuous improvement of program processes to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency
- Support the Director in overseeing a team of managers across Sales, Operations, and Procurement departments
- Assist with Wholesale’s HR needs including staff evaluations, professional development, recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and disciplinary processes.
Strategy
- Develop and monitor progress of work plans to meet Wholesale program strategic goals and objectives
- Monitor and analyze program performance metrics, providing insights and recommendations to the Director for continuous improvement
- Collaborate with the Director to develop and implement long-term strategies for sales/marketing, procurement, logistics, supply chain efficiencies, and community partnerships
- Offer ongoing feedback on existing SOP’s to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness
Grant and Fiscal Management
- Assist with developing and managing the program budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with organizational priorities
- Assist in overseeing financial reporting and analysis, ensuring accurate tracking of program expenditures and revenues, while ensuring that the Director has the necessary information to guide strategic financial planning
- Support the Director in managing program grants, including grant proposals, reporting, and tracking grant financials
- Participate in fundraising efforts including working with the Advancement team, meeting with prospective and current donors, etc.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
- At the direction of senior management, serve as a spokesperson for GrowNYC’s Wholesale and food hub work
- Assist GrowNYC’s Communications staff in responding to press inquiries and social media posts
- Support Wholesale Director in establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
Other
- Other ad hoc tasks as needed
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of related experience and/or relevant program management experience, including supervising staff
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated experience with managing program budgets and/or grants
- Demonstrable steady leadership and team management skills
- Excellent, professional written and oral communication skills, with a desire and proven ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and knowledge levels
- Demonstrated knowledge of regional food systems, social enterprises, and food business
- Excellent written and public speaking communication skills, with a desire and proven ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and knowledge levels
- Ability to manage concurrent projects in a fast-paced team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and willing to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Professional proficiency with Microsoft Office products, Google Workspace products, and other ERP, communications, workflow management, and project management applications, including but not limited to Slack, Local Food Marketplace, NetSuite, and Monday.com
Ideal Qualifications
- Strong commitment to a racially and socially just food system and GrowNYC Wholesale’s mission of building markets that preserve regional farms and ensuring that all New Yorkers have equal access to fresh, high-quality food
- Bilingualism (English/Spanish and/or ability to speak multiple languages is a plus)
- Experience in a union environment
- Valid NYS Driver’s License with clean driving record is a plus but not required
- Experience in the nonprofit sector
Schedule
This full-time position has a work schedule of Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm, and requires occasional flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Compensation
The position is exempt full-time and salaried. It pays $90,000 - $100,000 per year and includes full benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, incentive savings plan, paid time off, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and potential for parental leave for full-time regular employees who have been employed with GrowNYC for 175 days and FSA programs). This position is not union eligible/a part of the bargaining unit.
Location
This is a hybrid role including 2 days remote and 3 days from another GrowNYC work location ( Bronx Hub and/or at our downtown Manhattan office), including mandatory presence on Wednesdays at the downtown office. This role may occasionally require off-site field visits to customer/partner sites.
