Introduction

We are seeking a suitably qualified and experiencedSite Safety Managerto manage and oversee all occupational health and safety requirements on a 9MW solar PV project in Springs, Gauteng.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and monitoring site safety systems, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, conducting risk assessments and promoting a safe working environment for all employees, contractors and visitors. The candidate must have proven experience managing health and safety on solar PV, renewable energy or large-scale construction projects.

This is an immediate appointment, and candidates must hold the relevant qualifications, have practical site experience and be available to start without delay.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop, implement and maintain the project Health and Safety Management Plan in accordance with applicable legislation and project requirements.
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations and other applicable South African health and safety requirements.
Conduct site risk assessments, hazard identification and regular safety inspections.
Ensure that safe work procedures, method statements, permit-to-work systems and task-specific risk assessments are in place and followed.
Monitor high-risk activities, including electrical installations, work at height, lifting operations, excavation, material handling and the use of construction equipment.
Ensure that employees and subcontractors receive the required safety inductions, toolbox talks and task-specific training.
Verify that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is available, suitable and correctly used.
Monitor subcontractor safety performance and enforce compliance with site safety rules and procedures.
Investigate incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions, identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, incident registers, training records and statutory documentation.
Coordinate emergency preparedness, evacuation procedures, first-aid arrangements and emergency response plans.
Monitor housekeeping, access control, signage, equipment safety and general site conditions.
Ensure that relevant equipment, tools and machinery are inspected and maintained in safe working condition.
Liaise with project management, contractors, client representatives and relevant safety personnel on health and safety matters.
Conduct regular safety audits and follow up on corrective actions until closure.
Stop unsafe work where necessary and ensure hazards are addressed before work resumes.
Compile and submit regular health and safety performance reports to project management.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management or a related discipline.
Valid and relevant health and safety training and certifications appropriate to the role.
Proven experience as a Site Safety Manager, Construction Health and Safety Officer or equivalent senior safety professional on major construction, solar PV or renewable energy projects.
Strong working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations applicable in South Africa.
Experience conducting risk assessments, safety audits, incident investigations and contractor safety management.
Knowledge of electrical safety, working at heights, lifting operations, excavation safety and construction-site hazard control.
Experience preparing and implementing health and safety plans, method statements and permit-to-work procedures.
Registration with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP), where required for the appointed role, will be advantageous.
Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to enforce safety standards across multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent reporting, organisational and problem-solving abilities.
Able to work independently, make sound safety decisions and maintain high standards under pressure.
Must be suitably qualified, experienced and available to start immediately.
