This Opportunity
WSP USA has an immediate opening for a Project Director with a specialization in Renewable Energy and Carbon Markets to support the company’s growing Sustainability, Energy and Climate Change Division. See wsp.com/advancingsustainability for a description of our team and capabilities.
The individual will lead client-facing engagements in the design, implementation, and management of carbon market sourcing programs. Candidates should be passionate about sustainability and resilience, self-motivated and self-directed, collaborative, and able to produce high-quality work products. This position could work out of WSP's offices in either San Diego or San Francisco, CA; Boulder, CO; Chicago, IL, New York, NY; Portland, OR; Bethlehem, PA, or Seattle, WA. Other WSP office locations or remote options can be arranged for the preferred candidate.
Your Impact
- Managing client relationships and directing client delivery teams
- Leading business development activities with existing and prospective clients
- Develop renewable energy and carbon offset criteria that establishes client prerequisites and preferences and aligns with leading frameworks
- Develop technical specifications and manage request for proposal for clients sourcing renewable energy and carbon offsets or developing carbon removal programs
- Leading the development of renewable energy and carbon market strategies to achieve decarbonization and net zero goals
- Communicating changes in renewable energy and carbon markets to a range of audiences.
- Complete technical due diligence of carbon offset proposals, including avoidance and carbon removal project types
- Evaluate buy-side options for participation in carbon markets including short- and long-term procurements and direct project investment
- Identifying and evaluating opportunities for carbon abatement; analyzing renewable energy purchase options
- Developing and managing sustainability programs, in addition to related strategies and policies
- Designing sustainability performance targets including science-based and net-zero GHG targets
- Contributing to sustainability disclosures and other communications aligned with leading frameworks (e.g., CDP, GRI, SASB, TCFD)
- Researching leading sustainability programs and initiatives, including new carbon removal technologies and market innovations
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
In recognition of the full strategic suite of services offered by Advisory Services, the following degree requirements apply:
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree(s) in sustainability, energy, environmental studies, business, public policy, or related discipline
- 7 to 10 years of professional experience in sustainability, energy, or ESG management
- Demonstrated experience with sourcing, developing, or assessing renewable energy credits and carbon offsets for leading organizations
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, maturity, credibility, confidence, and integrity
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate results via Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and related software and craft compelling presentations and reports
- Demonstrated expertise with leading carbon offset frameworks including Gold Standard and VCS
- Demonstrated knowledge of evolving carbon removal types including soil carbon, biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS), and direct air capture
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects/project teams concurrently, and manage time efficiently
- Ability to collaborate remotely across geographies and platforms
- Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

- Master’s Degree in sustainability, energy, environmental studies, business, public policy, or related discipline preferred.

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $81,500 - $145,200
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
Expected Salary (Colorado only): $81,500 - $136,290
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
