Description of Job Duty:
The steam plant supervisor is responsible for overseeing, guiding, and supporting employees in their work to ensure that organizational goals are met and standards are maintained. The steam plant supervisor’s role encompasses various aspects, including:
Leadership: You will be expected to provide clear direction and motivation to the steam plant employees for job assignments within the steam plant. You will be responsible for providing a vision for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the steam plant and sharing that vision with the employees. You will need to foster a positive and productive work environment.
Communication: You will be responsible for effectively conveying expectations, feedback, and information to ensure clarity and understanding among team members. You will need to properly communicate work schedules, daily tasks, maintenance tasks, and other information as needed.
Coaching and Development: You will need to identify the strengths and areas for improvement for each employee and facilitate their professional growth through mentoring and training.
Performance Management: You will be monitoring employee performance, establishing SMART goals, conducting evaluations to assess progress, and addressing any issues.
Conflict Resolution: You will be addressing interpersonal conflicts or challenges within the team promptly and effectively to maintain harmony and productivity.
Resource Management: You will be responsible for properly allocating resources, including time and personnel, to achieve efficiency goals and optimize team performance.
The steam plant supervisor will be responsible for the overall management of the steam plant facility including shutdown periods for maintenance when no boilers will be operating. You will be responsible for locking down the facility and having a safety plan during the annual two-week shutdown period and throughout the year. You will need to develop and test a plan for natural gas curtailment when the boiler fuel changes from natural gas to diesel fuel. You will need to test all diesel fuel equipment annually prior to curtailment periods. You will be responsible for troubleshooting boiler and auxiliary equipment performance. You will be required to make decisions to do repairs internally or reach out to outside companies for help. You will be responsible for maintaining proper boiler operation by monitoring and adjusting boiler and auxiliary equipment controls for natural gas and oil-fired equipment. The maintenance and upkeep of all boilers and related steam plant equipment will be your responsibility. TTU does staff a steam plant maintenance employee to take care of the day-to-day facility maintenance items and boiler and auxiliary equipment repairs. The steam plant maintenance employee will report to you. The steam plant supervisor will plan, schedule, assign, supervise, and participate in major and minor maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment including ordering material and supplies for these repairs. Ordering the day-to-day supplies needed for the department will also be your responsibility. The steam plant has a water softener system that must be properly operated and maintained, including the proper use and amount of water softener salt to keep the water soft. The feed water for the boilers is also chemically treated to prevent scaling and corrosion in the boilers and auxiliary equipment and to maintain proper boiler heat transfer efficiency. The proper operation and maintenance of all water softening and chemical water treatment equipment is the steam plant supervisor’s responsibility. The steam plant supervisor will be responsible for working with the boiler inspectors. Any findings from a boiler inspector must be scheduled for repair and a plan put in place to manage the steam production. You will also be working with regulatory inspectors, chemical treatment specialists, equipment manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, TTU employees, and other personnel as necessary for the operation and maintenance of the steam plant. The steam plant supervisor will be responsible for the daily, monthly, and annual recording and reporting of data required by Title V permitting and the university. Completes and /or reviews records for compliance with the EPA regulations and boiler inspector requirements. The steam plant supervisor also must resolve employee work time issues and approve payroll every two weeks. You will also be responsible for approving or rejecting annual vacation time and sick time requests for the steam plant employees. The steam plant supervisor will be required to work as a steam plant operator as needed due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts or unplanned absences of scheduled employees.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Supervises the operation of high-pressure boilers fired by natural gas or fuel oil. Trains, schedules, supervises, assigns, inspects, and evaluates the work of employees. Continuously seeks ways to make the steam plant more efficient including training employees how to be more efficient in boiler operation and maintenance. You will be responsible for troubleshooting boilers and auxiliary equipment performance. You will need to develop and test a plan for natural gas curtailment when the boiler fuel changes from natural gas to diesel fuel. You will be responsible for maintaining proper boiler operation by monitoring and adjusting boiler and auxiliary equipment controls for natural gas and oil-fired equipment. Monitor boiler operation, recognize upset conditions and correct problems or safely shut down a boiler. Make decisions when to start up or shut down a boiler based upon campus loads, breakdowns, weather, or loss of efficiency. Plans, supervises, and directs maintenance and repair activities of boilers and auxiliary equipment of the steam plant. Orders the materials and supplies needed for maintenance and operation. The steam plant supervisor will be responsible for the daily, monthly, and annual recording and reporting of data required by Title V permitting and the university. Completes and /or reviews records for compliance with the EPA regulations and boiler inspector requirements. The steam plant supervisor will be required to work as a steam plant operator as needed due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts or unplanned absences of scheduled employees. The steam plant supervisor must be willing if called by an employee needing help to come to the plant and help the employee even if it is the off shift, weekend, or holiday. The steam plant supervisor must adhere to all TTU rules and regulations.
Physical Demands:
The steam plant supervisor will be required to support steam plant employees and steam plant maintenance with lifting parts, overhead work, working from heights, working from ladders, handling of hot parts, working in hot environments, working in cold environments, or otherwise as needed. The steam plant supervisor must be able to bend and lift at least 50 pounds. You must also be able to climb ladders.
Work Hours:
Typical work hours are Monday -Friday, 7:00 AM -3:00 PM. This position is on call as necessary.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED with seven years of related professional experience or an associate's degree (60 credit hours) with five years of related professional experience. Experience should include three years in a steam plant or similar maintenance environment.
Willing to learn basic Microsoft office programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
A successful candidate would have five years of natural gas and fuel oil fired boiler operations and maintenance experience.
A working knowledge of Microsoft office software.
Prior experience in a supervisory role in a steam plant.
