Job Summary
Support the property in implementing and maintaining sustainability and environmental programs in accordance with company standards, local regulations, owner requirements, and destination environmental commitments.
The Sustainability / Environmental Supervisor assists in monitoring environmental performance, maintaining records, conducting inspections, coordinating sustainability initiatives, and supporting operational departments in reducing environmental impact. The position works closely with Engineering, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Culinary, Procurement, Recreation, Landscaping, and other relevant teams to promote responsible use of resources and ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
Candidate Profile Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant experience in sustainability, environmental management, hospitality operations, or a related field.
- OR
- 2-year degree from an accredited university in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability, Engineering, Hospitality Management, or a related major.
- Previous experience in a luxury hotel, resort, tourism destination, coastal environment, or environmentally sensitive development is preferred.
- Environmental or sustainability certification is an advantage.
Core Work Activities Supporting Sustainability and Environmental Operations
- Support implementation of the property's sustainability strategy, initiatives, standards, and action plans.
- Monitor environmental practices across operational departments.
- Assist departments in identifying opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve resource efficiency.
- Support environmental initiatives related to energy, water, waste, biodiversity, responsible sourcing, and pollution prevention.
- Promote environmentally responsible operational practices while maintaining service and guest experience standards.
- Follow up with departments on sustainability commitments, targets, and action plans.
- Participate in sustainability meetings, initiatives, campaigns, and improvement projects.
Monitoring Energy and Water Performance
- Assist in monitoring electricity, fuel, and water consumption.
- Coordinate with Engineering to review consumption trends and identify unusual usage.
- Support water conservation and energy efficiency initiatives.
- Maintain sustainability tracking tools and supporting documentation.
- Assist in identifying operational opportunities for reducing unnecessary consumption.
- Track progress against established property sustainability targets.
Managing Waste and Recycling Programs
- Monitor waste segregation practices throughout the property.
- Ensure appropriate separation, storage, handling, and disposal of waste.
- Support recycling and waste diversion initiatives.
- Coordinate with operational teams regarding food waste, general waste, recyclable materials, and hazardous waste.
- Maintain waste records and support reporting requirements.
- Follow up with waste management contractors where required.
- Support initiatives to reduce single-use materials, packaging, and unnecessary waste.
Supporting Environmental Compliance
- Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, permits, company requirements, and destination standards.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections.
- Identify and report environmental risks, non-compliance, and opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain permits, reports, inspections, registers, and other environmental records.
- Follow up on corrective and preventive actions resulting from inspections and audits.
- Support internal and external environmental audits.
- Escalate significant environmental risks or incidents to management.
Protecting the Natural Environment
- Support environmental protection measures related to marine, coastal, terrestrial, or sensitive natural environments.
- Promote responsible operational practices that protect surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity.
- Report activities that may negatively impact wildlife, habitats, water quality, or natural resources.
- Support biodiversity and conservation initiatives where applicable.
- Coordinate with environmental specialists, consultants, or destination teams when required.
- Assist in environmental incident response, including spills or pollution-related events.
Collecting and Reporting Sustainability Data
- Collect environmental data from operational departments.
- Prepare monthly and periodic sustainability performance reports.
- Maintain accurate records related to energy, water, waste, carbon, and other environmental indicators.
- Assist in preparing dashboards, presentations, and management reports.
- Support sustainability certification, benchmarking, and assessment requirements.
- Ensure data accuracy and timely submission of required environmental reports.
Promoting Sustainability Awareness
- Support sustainability orientation and awareness programs for associates.
- Assist with environmental training sessions and campaigns.
- Promote responsible behaviors related to energy conservation, water conservation, recycling, and waste reduction.
- Encourage associates to participate in sustainability activities and environmental initiatives.
- Communicate sustainability updates and key environmental messages to departments.
Supporting Responsible Procurement
- Work with Procurement and operational departments to support environmentally responsible purchasing.
- Encourage reduced packaging, responsible sourcing, local sourcing, and sustainable alternatives where appropriate.
- Assist in maintaining supplier environmental documentation.
- Support review of products and services from an environmental perspective.
Follow All Company Policies and Procedures
- Follow all company and property policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.
- Protect company assets.
- Report accidents, injuries, environmental incidents, and unsafe work conditions to management.
- Complete safety training and certifications as required.
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct.
- Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional where applicable.

- Follow property safety, security, environmental, and emergency procedures.
- Identify and report unsafe or environmentally harmful conditions.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
- Support environmental emergency response procedures.
- Comply with hazardous material handling requirements where applicable.

- Prepare accurate and professional written reports and correspondence.
- Communicate environmental standards and requirements effectively.
- Listen and respond appropriately to questions and concerns.
- Maintain effective communication with operational departments and management.

- Support colleagues to achieve shared environmental and sustainability goals.
- Partner with operational departments to improve environmental performance.
- Handle sensitive situations professionally.
- Encourage cooperation and participation in sustainability initiatives.
Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement
- Monitor compliance with environmental procedures and standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve sustainability performance.
- Recommend practical improvements based on inspections, operational observations, and performance data.
- Support corrective and preventive action plans.
- Participate in audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Tasks
- Move through all areas of the property to conduct inspections.
- Stand, walk, or move for extended periods when conducting operational checks.
- Enter kitchens, engineering areas, waste areas, landscaping areas, beaches, back-of-house areas, and other operational locations as required.
- Use computers and standard office equipment for extended periods.
- Perform other reasonable job duties as requested by Supervisors or Managers.
