Environmental Professional-L2
Location: Prince George, BC – On-Site
Contract Schedule: Standard 5-day work week or 10 days on / 4 days off
Max INC Rate: $67.05/
Max T4 Rate: $55.41/
Accommodation: Accommodation will be provided, with hotel accommodation initially and transition to camp accommodation as availability permits. Candidates local to Prince George or elsewhere in BC are preferred, although exceptional FIFO candidates may be considered.
Role Overview
BC Hydro is seeking an Environmental Professional-L2 to provide environmental management and risk management support for complex infrastructure projects in the Prince George area. The successful candidate will apply strong environmental, regulatory, and natural resource management expertise to support projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and to required quality standards.
This role will work closely with project teams, internal stakeholders, regulators, First Nations, contractors, and other third parties to identify and manage environmental risks throughout project planning, design, construction, and operations.
Preference will be given to candidates local to British Columbia, particularly the Prince George area. Exceptional fly-in/fly-out candidates may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement environmental work plans using established procedures, technical standards, and project requirements.
- Identify, investigate, and manage environmental risks associated with project design, construction, and field activities.
- Provide environmental management advice and technical recommendations to project and operations teams.
- Support environmental planning, permitting, regulatory compliance, and environmental assessment activities.
- Manage complex environmental review processes and resolve unusual or challenging environmental issues in the field.
- Develop environmental protection measures, guidelines, mitigation strategies, and recommendations for project teams.
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary environmental studies, including developing terms of reference, monitoring progress, and reviewing results.
- Support environmental impact assessments, impact statements, public consultation, and regulatory processes.
- Provide technical input and recommendations during public hearings and stakeholder consultation programs.
- Support First Nations engagement and consultation related to environmental matters and project impacts.
- Participate in the development and negotiation of environmental mitigation and compensation programs.
- Review project specifications, designs, schedules, and field conditions to identify environmental risks and opportunities.
- Prepare technical reports, progress reports, environmental documentation, cost estimates, and project recommendations.
- Monitor environmental work schedules, budgets, quality, and deliverables to support project objectives.
- Exercise independent judgment when selecting, interpreting, and applying environmental information and technical methodologies.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal clients, contractors, consultants, regulators, First Nations, and other third parties.
- Provide advanced environmental management advice and recommendations to business teams.
- Support conflict resolution and issue management related to environmental risks and project activities.
- Provide leadership and guidance to project teams and environmental professionals as required.
- Ensure environmental activities are conducted safely and in accordance with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and BC Hydro standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 8–10+ years of environmental management, environmental risk management, or natural resource management experience.
- Experience managing environmental risks associated with large construction or infrastructure projects.
- Eligible for professional designation or membership in British Columbia, such as:
- RPF – Registered Professional Forester
- RPBio – Registered Professional Biologist
- P.Eng. – Professional Engineer
- P.Ag. – Professional Agrologist
- P.Geo. – Professional Geoscientist
- AScT – Applied Science Technologist
- Experience with multidisciplinary environmental studies and formal environmental assessment processes.
- Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting, regulatory requirements, and environmental management practices applicable to British Columbia.
- Experience working with First Nations and Indigenous communities on environmental or infrastructure projects.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting transmission, utility, or major infrastructure projects.
- Experience with transmission line projects.
- Experience with heavy civil construction and earthworks.
- Experience working on large-scale linear infrastructure projects.
- Previous experience working with BC Hydro or another major Canadian utility.
- Experience coordinating environmental requirements across engineering, construction, operations, and project management teams.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a senior environmental professional with strong field and project experience who can independently identify environmental risks, develop practical mitigation strategies, and provide sound technical advice to multidisciplinary project teams. They will be comfortable working in complex construction environments, engaging with First Nations and stakeholders, navigating regulatory requirements, and resolving environmental issues while maintaining project safety, schedule, cost, and quality objectives.
