We are looking for an EHS Director to join our team in Costa Rica.
As the company continues to expand its operations in Costa Rica, there is a need for a dedicated executive-level leader to establish and drive a proactive, scalable, and sustainable Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) strategy. This role provides strategic leadership across environmental, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, and sustainability programs, ensuring the organization protects its employees, maintains regulatory compliance, and strengthens operational excellence. The leader will build the systems, culture, and capabilities necessary to support the company’s continued growth while embedding EHS as a core component of business performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Develop and execute the site EHS strategy, management system, and continuous improvement roadmap aligned with corporate and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the site EHS subject matter expert and key contributor to corporate-wide initiatives, ensuring compliance, risk management, and adoption of industry best practices.
- Lead programs for hazard identification, incident prevention, emergency preparedness, crisis management, and business continuity.
- Oversee environmental compliance, permitting, regulatory reporting, sustainability, waste reduction, energy management, and resource conservation initiatives.
- Direct industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational health, wellness, and contractor safety programs.
- Lead EHS audits, inspections, risk assessments, and corrective action initiatives, serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and external auditors.
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, Facilities, HR, Quality, and other leaders to integrate EHS into business and operational decisions.
- Support facility expansions, equipment installations, and capital projects by ensuring EHS requirements are incorporated into design and implementation.
- Establish clear safety leadership expectations, accountability, and employee engagement to foster a proactive, safety-first culture across the organization
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

- EHS Engineer II
- EHS Technician
Supervision: Direction: receive guidance with respect to general objectives; in the majority of tasks and projects assigned, determine methods, work sequence, scheduling, and how to achieve objectives of assignments; operate within specific policy guidelines.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health, Safety Management, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive EHS experience, preferably within manufacturing, medical device, life sciences, or other highly regulated industries.
- Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, with demonstrated success in developing EHS strategies, systems, and high-performing teams.
- Strong knowledge of Costa Rican EHS regulations, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the medical device or life sciences industry.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proven experience leading EHS programs within medical device, pharmaceutical, life sciences, electronics, or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 45001, environmental management systems, occupational health and safety standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated track record of improving safety performance, reducing incidents, and driving a proactive safety culture.
- Experience leading regulatory inspections, environmental audits, risk assessments, and corrective and preventive action programs.
- Strong knowledge of industrial hygiene, ergonomics, hazard identification, risk assessment, and environmental compliance.
- Proven expertise in incident investigation, root cause analysis, crisis management, and emergency response.
- Experience supporting facility start-ups, expansions, capital projects, mergers, acquisitions, or significant organizational growth.
- Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, ISO 45001 Lead Auditor, or equivalent are preferred.
