JobSummary
India stands at a complex challenge of ensuring
universal nutritional security for an increasing yet largely deprived
population in a rapidly changing climate. This needsactionbeyondproducingmore food – we need to evolve what we eat and how we produce,
process and distribute our food.
Sustainable agriculture practices and systems (SAPSs) offer a
potential pathway for sustainable agriculture in India. While practices like
Natural Farming (NF) have received political traction in the lastcoupleofyears,therearevoicesthatcautionamorepragmaticapproach,aswellasthosewho questiontheideaofatransitiontonaturalfarming.Thereisanurgentneedtoassessthestrengths and weaknesses
of these emerging SAPS, and identify the opportunities and threats based on
evidence and experiences from the ground. As a part of this we are now working
towards robust evidence building, and helping embed metrics in the data collection
systems, and monitoring and evaluationforprogrammes,thatcanthen
