Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and related legislation across the Business Unit, including adherence to regulations and organisational standards such as ISO and OHSA.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA), implement safety initiatives, and address unsafe practices promptly to mitigate workplace risks.
- Lead and facilitate thorough incident investigations in accordance with Chief Safety Officer directives, ensuring timely closure of compliance issues and regulatory directives.
- Manage and oversee internal and external safety and environmental audits, compiling accurate statistical and legal reports for management and regulatory bodies.
- Provide expert advisory support on safety matters to line management, coaching and mentoring Safety, Health and Environmental representatives to foster a strong safety culture.
- Coordinate contractor safety management including quality assurance, training compliance, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards, and safety inductions.
- Maintain and enhance customer and client relationships by responding to safety-related service queries, managing complaints, and ensuring service delivery meets agreed targets.
- Promote and enforce good housekeeping and healthy work environment practices, supporting continuous improvement and safety consciousness throughout the workforce.
- Chair Safety, Health and Environmental representative meetings as required and facilitate interdepartmental collaboration to uphold safety standards.

Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma in Safety Management (Essential/Minimum)
- Certificate in First Line Management (Essential/Minimum)
- Bachelor of Technology in a relevant field (Recommended/Desirable)
- 3 to 5 years' operational experience in safety within heavy industry, mining, or production environments
- Valid appointment in terms of Mine Health and Safety Act Regulation 2.17.1 as a Safety Officer (Essential/Minimum)
- Psychometric Assessment (To be conducted by Exxaro (Essential/Minimum)
- Certificate of Fitness (To be conducted by Exxaro (Essential/Minimum)
- Proven ability to conduct hazard identification and risk assessments, including experience with HIRA processes
- Experience in managing and conducting internal and external safety and environmental audits
- Strong knowledge of relevant legislation including Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, ISO standards, and ability to ensure compliance
- Demonstrated skills in incident investigation according to regulatory and organizational protocols
- Competence in coaching and mentoring Safety, Health and Environmental representatives to promote a positive safety culture
- Capability to manage contractor safety assurance processes and compliance with safety training and PPE requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and customer relationship management skills, with responsiveness to safety-related service inquiries and complaints
