Summary
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of nine years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion.
Major Duties
The WG-3603-10 Mason position is essential to the successful execution of the Legacy Restoration Fund project to "Address Critical Repairs in the Platt and Buckhorn Developed Areas" at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This multi-year major rehabilitation project involves the restoration and preservation of historic masonry structures, spring facilities, retaining walls, walkways, bridges, and other masonry features that are integral to the park's infrastructure and visitor experience. The project is one of the National Park Service's Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund investments to address deferred maintenance and preserve critical assets. Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, repair, alterations, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of brick, stone and block. Repairs and maintains historic masonry on buildings, parapets, and boundary fence, chimney, fireplaces, manholes, and boilers. Must be able to match existing historic surfaces. Must have comprehensive knowledge of mixing techniques, applications, etc. Must have extensive skill in cutting and shaping block, terra cotta, brick and stone. Incumbent must be able to remove portions of walls, partitions, or other similar structures and repair in kind, and for the installation of doors and windows. Must be able to parch and/or replace stucco, including paper, wire scratch, and brown coats to match existing historic surfaces. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of concrete, terra cotta brick, and stucco surfaces, such as characteristics, mixing technique, applications, etc. Must have skills in cutting and shaping block, terra cotta, brick, and stone. Must be able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently and determine the layout and work sequence. In addition to laying whole brick in straight, horizontal rows, must be able to perform a variety of more complex brickwork. Prepares surfaces for painting by sanding, buffing, and cleaning such as brushes and other painting equipment; moves ladders, scaffolding and /or drop clothes; carries paint brushes and equipment. Applies one or more sealing compounds occasionally. Mix paint to match historic colors. Must be able to cut in around windows, doors, corners, lighting, etc. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The agency retains sole discretion and without further competition, the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the term appointment regulation(s). No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action. Salary Range Information: First time hires to the federal government typically start at the beginning salary in the range for their respective grade level.
