Position Summary
The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Coordinator will serve as Atlas Salt’s field-level representative for health, safety, and environmental compliance activities at the Great Atlantic Salt Project. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering or other designated Project leadership, the role supports the implementation of the Project Health & Safety Management Plan, Environmental Management Plans, Project Management Plans (PMPs), and Project Compliance Plans (PCPs).
This position requires strong site presence, practical judgment, regulatory awareness, technical documentation skills, and effective coordination with contractors, IPD partners, consultants, and regulatory agencies. The role is intended to support safe and compliant project execution through engineering, early works, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
Key Responsibilities
Act as Atlas Salt’s field-level representative for HSE matters during site activities, including early works, construction, contractor mobilization, and operational readiness tasks.
Support implementation, monitoring, and verification of the Project Health & Safety Management Plan, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Protection Plans, and related compliance plans.
Conduct routine field inspections, workplace observations, and compliance checks to verify adherence to site safety procedures, environmental controls, permits, and project-specific requirements.
Support daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, field-level hazard assessments, job hazard analyses, and worker engagement activities.
Monitor higher-risk work activities and support permit-to-work controls, including hot work, confined space, working at heights, ground disturbance, energized work, and other site-specific critical controls.
Coordinate with contractors, construction management, engineering, environmental consultants, and site supervision to ensure HSE requirements are integrated into work planning and execution.
Assist in satisfying environmental conditions and commitments associated with the Project’s release from Environmental Assessment and subsequent regulatory approvals.
Coordinate and document environmental monitoring activities, including sampling, inspections, erosion and sediment control checks, spill prevention measures, water management, dust, noise, wildlife, and other applicable programs.
Maintain accurate field records, inspection logs, training records, incident records, corrective-action trackers, environmental monitoring records, and chain-of-custody documentation.
Support incident response, near-miss reporting, investigation, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action closeout.
Support emergency preparedness, first aid, site orientation, contractor onboarding, and HSE training activities as required.
Track and report HSE performance metrics for weekly and monthly project reporting, including contractor performance, inspection findings, incidents, corrective actions, and environmental compliance status.
Identify, document, and escalate health, safety, environmental, or compliance risks in a timely and constructive manner.
Qualifications
Education: Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Technology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
Experience: 3+ years of relevant field or site-based HSE experience preferred. Experience in mining, construction, heavy civil, industrial, or remote project environments considered an asset. Experience working with contractors, consultants, or multi-disciplinary project teams considered an asset.
Technical Skills: Working knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador occupational health and safety legislation, environmental permitting requirements, and construction-site safe work practices. Familiarity with Health & Safety Management Plans, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Protection Plans, Project Compliance Plans, and permit-condition tracking. Practical understanding of field inspections, hazard identification, incident reporting, corrective-action tracking, environmental monitoring, and contractor compliance oversight. Strong technical writing, recordkeeping, and reporting skills. Proficiency with MS Office. Experience with Aconex, SharePoint, Power BI, or environmental / safety data-management tools considered an asset.
Certifications (assets): Valid driver’s license. Safety training such as WHMIS, First Aid, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, or equivalent site-safety programs. Professional certification or progress toward certification, such as NCSO, CRST, CRSP, EP, or equivalent, considered an asset.

Work Environment
Combination of field-based and office-based work.
Regular site presence required in St. George’s Office and Project Site.
Exposure to construction, mining, industrial, and outdoor field environments.
Compliance with site safety, PPE, orientation, and access requirements.
Some travel, irregular hours, or schedule flexibility may be required to support field activities and contractor work fronts.
