A commercial solar EPC focused on helping businesses reduce operating costs through rooftop solar and battery energy storage solutions is looking for an Interconnection Specialist. Our work centers on commercial and industrial distributed generation projects — not utility-scale solar.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Commercial Solar Interconnection Specialist to manage utility interconnection for commercial rooftop solar and solar + storage projects ranging from approximately 50 kW to 2 MW. This role will own the interconnection process from application through approval and PTO and play a key role in keeping utility requirements, project design, and execution aligned.
The ideal candidate has experience with commercial solar interconnection, understands how battery energy storage systems (BESS) impact utility review, controls, and metering, and can work effectively with utilities, engineers, AHJs, and internal project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage utility interconnection applications for commercial rooftop solar and solar + storage projects ranging from 50 kW to 2 MW
- Prepare, submit, and track interconnection applications through approval, construction coordination, and PTO
- Review utility requirements, study comments, and technical feedback
- Coordinate with design, engineering, and project management teams to compile required application materials, including single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, site plans, metering details, and protection information
- Serve as Buffalo Solar’s primary utility-facing point of contact for interconnection questions, RFIs, supplemental requests, study comments, and approval conditions
- Support projects that include battery storage by understanding impacts on interconnection applications, controls, metering, and utility review
- Identify utility-related risks early, including upgrade requirements, metering needs, protection requirements, and utility-specific design concerns
- Coordinate utility-facing deliverables required for commissioning, witness testing, final approvals, and PTO
- Maintain clear records of application status, utility correspondence, approval milestones, and outstanding action items across multiple active projects
- Help improve and standardize Buffalo Solar’s interconnection workflows and documentation
Qualifications
- Experience managing interconnection for commercial solar / distributed generation projects, ideally in the 50 kW to 2 MW range
- Strong understanding of utility interconnection processes, application requirements, and approval milestones
- Working knowledge of battery storage integration and how storage impacts utility applications, controls, and metering
- Solid understanding of commercial solar electrical design concepts, including single-line diagrams, point of interconnection, metering configurations, and utility-facing technical requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively with utilities, engineers, AHJs, and internal teams
- Strong project management, follow-up, and organizational skills
- High attention to detail and strong written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with commercial solar interconnection in New York and throughout the north east
- Familiarity with supplemental review, protection requirements, utility witness testing, and PTO / closeout documentation
- Ability to review electrical drawings and discuss technical design details with confidence
