Role Overview
- Department: Environment Management (EMD) / Health, Safety & Environment (EHS)
- Reports To: Head of Environment, Chief Sustainability Officer, or Plant Head
- Location: Typically based at integrated steel plants or corporate EMD offices (often in industrial hubs) [1, 2, 3]
1. Statutory Compliance & Clearances
- Spearhead the application and renewal of statutory licenses, including Consent to Establish (CTE), Consent to Operate (CTO), and Environmental Clearances (EC) for brownfield/greenfield projects.
- Ensure 100% compliance with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) norms.
- Submit half-yearly MoEF&CC compliance reports, hazardous waste returns, and environmental statements on time. [1, 2]
2. Pollution Control & Monitoring
- Oversee continuous ambient air quality, stack emission monitoring, and noise-level measurements.
- Monitor effluent treatment plants (ETP), sewage treatment plants (STP), and ensure Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) norms are met.
- Manage the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, e-waste, and battery waste per environmental laws. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
3. Sustainability & ESG Initiatives
- Develop Annual Business Plans targeting waste reduction, energy efficiency, and increased recycling rates.
- Champion the use of Best Available Technologies (BAT) to minimize carbon emissions.
- Prepare and manage Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data and sustainability reports aligned with global guidelines. [1, 2, 3, 4]
4. Audits & Team Leadership
- Conduct internal environmental audits and manage external regulatory inspections.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of environmental engineers and laboratory analysts.
- Conduct awareness and training programs regarding environmental responsibilities for plant staff and contractors. [1, 2, 3]
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or Occupational Health.
- Experience: 15+ years of progressive experience in EHS/Environment roles, heavily focused on core industries like steel or power.
- Certifications: Lead Auditor certification for ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) is highly preferred.
- Key Skills: Expert knowledge of Indian Forest and Environmental Legislations, excellent liaison skills with government bodies, and data analytical capabilities
