Job Overview
We are seeking an ambitious and collaborative Environmental Engineer to join the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team to support the development and operation of Saronic’s Port Alpha shipyard. This role will serve as the on-site environmental lead responsible for environmental due diligence, permitting, monitoring, and compliance across all phases of site development and shipyard operations. The Environmental Engineer will support the transition of a coastal site into a fully operational shipyard, which may include greenfield development, redevelopment of previously used industrial properties, or brownfield remediation. In addition, this role will oversee environmental compliance programs related to air quality, water quality, stormwater management, hazardous waste, and hazardous materials, while supporting environmental monitoring and regulatory reporting. The Environmental Engineer will partner with engineering, construction, and operations teams to reduce environmental risk and ensure regulatory compliance during the development and operation of Port Alpha
Responsibilities
Evaluate and manage environmental risks associated with greenfield and brownfield site development, including site characterization, remediation planning, and regulatory closure strategies where applicable.
Environmental Permitting & Waterfront Development
Manage permitting activities including wetlands permitting, dredging and fill permits, coastal development approvals, and USACE Section 404 and Section 10 permits.
Environmental Compliance Programs
Establish and oversee environmental compliance programs including air permits, hazardous and industrial waste management, stormwater pollution prevention (SWPPP), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), and wastewater discharge permits.
Environmental Monitoring & Regulatory Reporting
Develop and manage environmental monitoring and inspection programs including stormwater monitoring, water quality monitoring, wetlands monitoring, and construction environmental compliance inspections.
Prepare and submit environmental regulatory reports including Tier II Chemical Inventory, Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), hazardous waste reports, and air emissions inventories.
Regulatory & Cross-Functional Coordination
Serve as a primary environmental liaison with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), EPA, and state environmental agencies, supporting permit applications, regulatory interactions, and agency inspections.
Support environmental training, internal audits, regulatory reporting, and continuous improvement of environmental management systems.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Public Health, or related environmental discipline
Experience preparing environmental regulatory reports such as Tier II, TRI, hazardous waste reports, or air emissions inventories
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting shipyards, ports, maritime infrastructure, or waterfront industrial development
