Program Overview for Sustainable Cities and Transport
WRI India's urban development work aims to transform the way cities are planned and designed to ensure that urban development benefits people, nature and climate. We collaborate at all levels with the government, city administrations, urban stakeholders and partners to help cities become resilient, low-carbon and liveable while balancing their socio-economic goals. Job Highlight
WRI India is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to join Mumbai’s Urban Development team to support their effort in updating the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP). As per the city’s commitment, the update is scheduled to take place this financial year, five years after the first release of MCAP in 2022. As the knowledge partner on MCAP, WRI India is seeking to build on their engagement with departments, civic institutions, community-based organizations, academic institutions, and other diverse stakeholders to drive a more hyper-local planning process that can support the city-wide CAP update this year. Through participatory planning approaches, this exercise aims to strengthen the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) and work closely with government authorities to integrate people’s needs and perspectives into planning and governance. The candidate would also support the team’s work in Maharashtra at the state level. At the state level, the role will include support to AMRUT cities in enabling climate resilience projects and governance interventions through capacity building, research and coordination in urban areas. The ideal candidate should have experience working in the development sector on climate change and the environment / policy and governance / urban planning and design / sustainable development etc. and must have research and coordination skills along with excellent skills in report writing. Knowledge of Marathi is preferred.
What you will do:
·Carry out on-ground and desk research and coordinate with city, state and other relevant stakeholders that can inform climate projects and policy interventions.
·Expand citizen, youth and community engagement, and socialize climate action to make it more relatable to people for driving systemic change
·Support partnerships with community-based organizations to facilitate public participation in a meaningful manner; build people-centric initiatives to localize action; and decentralize the consultation and dissemination process to zonal, ward and neighborhood levels.
·Contribute to thematic studies, roadmaps, policy briefs, and blogs on topics related to climate resilience, governance, sustainable development, etc.
·Assist in coordinating events for engagement with internal and external stakeholders through roundtables, seminars/ webinars, workshops, policy interactions, training, and other communication and outreach activities.
·Participate in relevant external and/or internal meetings and stakeholders’ consultations to invite inputs and integrate the same.
·Assist in visual communication work when needed.
·Provide support using relevant data and design software towards analysis and compilation of communication materials.
·Locate and coordinate with relevant organizations and stakeholders to obtain required data and content.
·Learn about existing planning policies at the city/state and national level for the same.
·Contribute towards developing presentations for stakeholder meetings and outputs.
·Assist in designing and creating innovative problem-solving approaches to effectively address key questions and challenges posed by our research goals and program objectives.
What you will need:
·Post-graduate in the related field of environmental studies, urban resilience, ecology, biodiversity, planning, urban design, sustainable development, economics, public policy etc.
·4 to 7 years of experience in the development sector, preferably on urban development.
·Knowledge of climate change, urban resilience, citizen-led planning, or a keen interest in developing the same.
·Demonstrated experience in leading and/or contributing to interdisciplinary research projects on climate change, urban resilience, community-based projects and other related work.
·Strong communication skills, ability to liaise with government and other stakeholders to collaborate, collect data, communicate findings, and seek feedback iteratively.
·Proficiency in quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis
·Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team.
·Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
·Ability to think creatively, work calmly and enthusiastically under pressure.
·Proficiency in visual communication- an adept use of computer software (Adobe suite- Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, basic 3D modelling) is a plus.
Potential Salary and Benefits: INR 14,00,000 to 17,50,000 Per Annum
Salary shall be commensurate with experience and skills. WRI offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package.
