Position Summary
To direct and perform work consisting of tasks of a varied nature necessary to the operation, facilities and services of the Society.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Clean assigned areas of the zoo in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Patrol assigned areas of zoo grounds, buildings, property, and structures. Remove litter, empty and clean waste/recycling receptacles, and clean & disinfect surfaces in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Perform janitorial duties as assigned.
- Assist in ground maintenance work including, but not limited to, raking leaves; shoveling snow; spreading mulch, gravel, or crusher fines.
- Assist in the movement of WCS equipment and supplies.
- Operate vehicles or equipment such as motorized carts, snow throwers, leaf blowers, carpet extractors, vacuums, buffing machines.
- Protect property by properly securing buildings, storage areas, structures, gates, equipment, tools, and supplies in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Display proficiency and skills in use of tools and equipment associated with applicable tasks. Complete all required training in accordance with WCS policies regarding safety and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Perform mail/supply run to Bronx Zoo as requested (task assigned to individuals who have a valid driver’s license and have completed required training).
- Assist zoo guests during their visit with directions or other information.
Internal Qualification RequirementsJob Qualifications
Hands‐on experience in use of cleaning equipment.
Willingness to complete required training to safely utilize tools and operate equipment in accordance with established procedures.
Ability to represent WCS in a professional manner and to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, and zoo guests.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Valid Driver’s License (preferred)
Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and special events as the schedule demands.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires work outdoors in all weather conditions and in office environments. Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. drill, wire cutters, computer keyboard) and operate equipment (e.g. vacuum cleaners, pressure washer, snow thrower, leaf blower and related janitorial equipment). Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
