SHEQ Manager – Awarua
- A genuine investment in your growth with real upskilling, leadership development, and a supportive team.
- Join our “BeBallance” benefit programme, including life, income protection, critical and medical insurance.
ABOUT THE ROLE
If you believe great safety culture is built through relationships, not just rulebooks then this role is for you.
As SHEQ Manager at Ballance’s Awarua site in Invercargill, you’ll be the person who makes health, safety, environment, and quality feel real and relevant to the people doing the work every day. This isn’t a desk job. You’ll be visible, connected, and genuinely influential across manufacturing, despatch, maintenance, and support functions.
You’ll lead a team and work alongside a Site Manager who values your expertise, and be a trusted partner to the people keeping Awarua running. The site is complex, the stakes are real, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference is significant.
In this role, you will:
- Embed health, safety, environment, and quality practices at the Awarua site, building a culture where safety is lived, not just managed.
- Lead proactive risk identification, risk management and make sure incidents and near misses are thoroughly investigated with lasting corrective actions, while partnering with the wider National Health & Safety Team.
- Own and maintain SHEQ management systems and compliance frameworks, keeping them current, practical, and fit for purpose.
- Provide leadership and governance over quality systems and laboratory operations, ensuring consistent, reliable, and compliant outcomes.
- Lead, develop, and engage your team with clarity on expectations, real accountability, and genuine support.
- Partner with production, maintenance, and support teams to integrate SHEQ into everyday decisions, planning, and change.
ABOUT YOU
You’re an experienced SHEQ professional who leads with credibility, not just authority. You know how to build trust on the floor as well as the boardroom, and you understand that the best safety outcomes come from people who genuinely care.
To be considered for this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated experience leading SHEQ or safety and quality functions in a complex operational environment.
- Strong understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to manufacturing or heavy industry.
- A track record of influencing leaders and frontline teams to own and improve safety and quality outcomes.
- Proven ability to implement and maintain management systems — and drive continuous improvement that sticks.
- Relevant qualifications in health and safety, quality, environmental management, or a related field.
- Experience in manufacturing, process, or heavy industry — exposure to laboratory or quality assurance functions is a bonus.
