Position Summary:
The Resident in Zoological Medicine and Surgery plays an important role in providing quality medical and surgical care to the animals in WCS Zoos and Aquarium. Based at the Bronx Zoo's Wildlife Health Center, this position provides high-quality veterinary care to the WCS animal collections within a complex multi-veterinarian, multi-technician health care setting. This position contributes to, enlarges, and upholds the WCS policies toward the Equal Employment Opportunities for women, minorities, veterans, the handicapped, and other designated groups.
Principal Responsibilities: - Assist in the health care of the animal collections at the Bronx Zoo, the City Zoos, and the New York Aquarium under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
- Assist in carrying out the preventive medicine program under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
- Diagnose and treat clinical medicine and surgery cases under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
- Perform necropsy exams under the supervision of staff veterinary pathologist.
- Perform night treatments and hand-rearing of infant animals as needed.
- Instruct veterinary student preceptors.
- Prepare and present scientific presentations to peers.
- Prepare and submit for publication in a peer reviewed journal at least one scientific paper
- Be on call for emergencies, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Take part in educational and training opportunities as appropriate.
- To cooperate with and aid other WCS employees in their job functions as appropriate.
- Perform any and all duties appropriate for a veterinarian of the WCS.
Internal Qualification RequirementsMust hold a veterinary degree (DVM, VMD, Dl\\.f\\T, or equivalent); have, or be eligible for, a New York State Veterinary license, USDA accreditation (Category II, including cervid TB testing), and a valid Driver's license
Must understand and comply with federal and NYS DEA regulations and be eligible to hold a DEA registration
Minimum one year full time veterinary experience
Must be able to work effectively in a complex, multi-veterinarian, multi-technician health care setting
Must be able to work effectively as part of a collaborative team that interacts closely with other departments, including Animal Care and Facilities teams.
Be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
